WORCESTER, Mass. (Nov. 11, 2011) - Brodie Reid netted the eventual game-winning goal early in the third period and Harri Sateri made big saves down the stretch as the Worcester Sharks held on for a 3-2 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at DCU Center on Friday afternoon. With the win, Worcester improves to 5-2-0-2. The Sound Tigers record now sits at 6-6-1-0 with the loss.
Worcester took a 1-0 lead early in the first period in the most unlikely of situations. With the Sound Tigers on a 5-on-3 power play, Ty Wishart was unable to keep a bouncing puck in the Sharks zone, leading to a rush for Worcester. John McCarthy carried the puck into the Sound Tigers zone along the left boards and fired from the left circle over Anders Nilsson's glove for a shorthanded goal to give Worcester the lead 8:32 into the game.
The Sound Tigers evened the score just as a penalty of their own expired late in the opening frame. David Ullstrom exited the box following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and took a breakout pass from Casey Cizikas. Ullstrom gathered the puck by the Worcester blue line, shot from the left circle off of Harri Sateri's glove and into the net for his eighth goal of the season, and the two sides were tied at one after 20 minutes of play.
The Sharks retook their lead midway through the second period. Following a long stoppage due to a lighting issue at DCU Center, Cam McIntyre deflected a shot past Nilsson at 7:48 of the middle frame to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Sharks. Worcester increased the lead to two early in the third period. Similar to McCarthy's goal earlier in the game, Reid fired from the left circle over Nilsson's glove as Worcester had a 3-1 lead with 15:17 left in regulation.
Both Nino Niederreiter and Jeremy Colliton hit iron with shots during the third period, however Niederreiter would get redemption and brought the Sound Tigers within one goal. Niederreiter received a pass from Trevor Frischmon along the left side of the Worcester zone, skated into the slot and beat Sateri for his first AHL goal and first goal of the season to cut the Sound Tigers deficit to 3-2. The Sound Tigers threatened late as Nilsson was pulled in favor of the extra attacker, however Ullstrom's final shot in the waning seconds was sticked aside by Sateri and Worcester came away with the 3-2 win.
The Sound Tigers have now played in eight straight one-goal games and are 4-3-1-0 in those eight contests.
Bridgeport continues its three-game weekend tomorrow when they travel to face the Springfield Falcons for the first time this season at MassMutual Center. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
