Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
HERSHEY, Pa. - Simon Despres beat Dany Sabourin with a wrist shot 57 seconds into the overtime to give the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 5-4 win over the Hershey Bears on Friday at the Giant Center. The Penguins' winning streak has reached eight games and their road record remains perfect at 8-0.
With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on top, 3-2, coming into the third, Keith Aucoin tied the contest at 4:03 when he pounced on a rebound chance that fell to the right of goalie Brad Thiessen.
Colin McDonald would give the Penguins the edge once again at the 8:54 mark of the third, throwing a loose puck past Dany Sabourin after the netminder stopped Dustin Jeffrey's initial redirection in front.
Hershey was able to pick up a point and force the extra session on a late power play goal by Mattias Sjogren, who one-timed Aucion's centering pass into the cage with 2:24 left in regulation.
Despres allowed the Penguins to celebrate when it was all over as he wheeled into the slot before rifling a shot to the top right corner of the net. The tally was Despres' third game-winner of the season.
Thiessen gathered his league-leading ninth win with 21 saves on 25 shots.
The Bears were able to hop out to a 1-0 lead at three minutes in when Maxime Lacroix won a faceoff to the blueline and Julien Broulliette snuck a shot through a screened Thiessen.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton needed less than three minutes to answer back after Ben Street took the puck to the front of the Hershey net and a crashing Philip Samuelsson poked it past Sabourin for his first professional goal. Street would gather four assists in the contest.
A late penalty in the first allowed Hershey to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room literally as time expired. Patrick McNeill fired a shot from the near circle that Jacob Micflikier redirected into the top corner just as the period came to end.
Seeming as though they would finish up the second period down 2-1, the Penguins instead found themselves up by a goal at the intermission thanks to back-to-back goals. The game was tied up with 23.5 seconds remaining on Paul Thompson's goal and, sixteen seconds later, Ryan Craig then made it 3-2. `
The Penguins return to the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Saturday, November 12, battling the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 PM. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins playing cards, courtesy of the Mohegan Sun Casino at Pocono Downs.
