Manchester Monarchs News Release
PROVIDENCE, RI -The Providence Bruins' late third period goal broke the deadlock and ended goaltender Martin Jones shutout bid as the Manchester Monarchs were blanked 1-0 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Friday night.
Manchester (6-9-0-1) is in third place in the Atlantic Division with 13 points. The Bruins (7-7-1-0) rank second in the Atlantic Division with 15 points.
"Tonight was a hard fought game," said Monarch Head Coach Mark Morris. "A fortunate late bounce for Providence was the deciding factor. A rebound got cleared right onto their stick in the slot. The puck fluttered up and over (Martin) Jones for the lone goal of the game. Prior to that, David Kolomatis had a blocked shot that led to a huge breakaway save by Jones. We had several chances to score throughout the game but (Anton) Khudobin made all the stops, none bigger than the one on (Andrei) Loktionov with less than a minute remaining. Our effort was solid; unfortunately there wasn't any finish to our game when we had our chances to score."
The Bruins scored the lone goal of the game at 15:04 of the third period. Right wing Jamie Tardif started the breakout play up the left wing boards before rifling a pass from the Bruins blueline to the Monarchs blueline to center Josh Hennessy along the right wing boards. Hennessy carried the puck to the bottom of the right face-off circle before wristing a bad angle shot producing a rebound in front of the net. The Monarchs clearing attempt failed as center Maxime Sauve corralled the puck and flipped a no-look backhand into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Jones (4-7-0) took his seventh loss of the season stopping 22-of-23 shots. Bruins netminder Anton Khudobin (6-6-0) earned his sixth victory and first shutout of the season making saves on all 30 shots faced.
Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. The Bruins were 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Notables: The Monarchs were shutout for the third time this season and second time on the road...The Monarchs are now 2-1-0-1 against the Bruins this season...Monarchs Center Marc-Andre Cliche had his three-game point-streak snapped; he had three points (2-13) in his last three games.
The Monarchs travel to the DCU Center to take on the Worcester Sharks at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2011. Catch all the play-by-play action of Monarchs hockey with Ken Cail on the Monarchs Radio Network WMYF, WGIR.com and at www.manchestermonarchs.com.
