CLEVELAND, Ohio (November 11, 2011) - San Antonio forward Michal Repik tallied the lone Rampage goal in a 4-1 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters on Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena.
For the second consecutive night, the Lake Erie Monsters scored two goals within the first nine minutes of the initial faceoff to gain an early lead on the Rampage. This time Monsters center Evan Brophey walked away with a hat trick.
Brophey started the scoring with a goal off a one-timer at 3:50 of the opening period when he took a pass in the slot from left wing Greg Mauldin and ripped a shot over the blocker of Rampage goaltender Jacob Markstrom to give the Monsters a 1-0 lead. Right wing David Van der Gulik picked up his eighth helper of the year with a secondary assist on the goal.
Center Ryan Stoa added to the Lake Erie lead with a one-timer of his own just over five minutes later. Forward Brad Malone fed Stoa in front of the crease and Stoa finished the play by depositing the puck into the right side of the net to double the Monsters lead to 2-0. Right wing Luke Walker notched his eighth point of the season with an assist on the Stoa goal.
Brophey widened the Lake Erie advantage to 3-0 at 14:13 of the first on a play that was started as Mauldin worked the puck down low to Van der Gulik. Van der Gulik then backhanded a pass out to the front of the net where Brophey tapped the puck into an open left side of the goal for his second score of the game.
Brophey rounded out the hat trick with a power-play goal at 14:42 of the second period which came on the rebound of a point shot from Lake Erie defenseman Tyson Barrie. Markstrom stopped Barrie's shot and the puck caromed out to Brophey, who fired it into the net for a 4-0 Monsters edge. The secondary assist on the score was given to Van der Gulik, who tallied his second helper of the game and fourth point against the Rampage in two nights.
The Rampage cut the Monsters lead to 4-1 with a power-play goal from Repik at 7:32 of the third period. Bracken Kearns won the faceoff and immediately passed the puck to Mike Kostka at the right point. Kostka then passed the puck along to blue line to Repik who blasted a shot from the left point past Lake Erie goalie Cedric Desjardins for his ninth point of the season.
Desjardins stopped 27 of the 28 Rampage shots he faced while Markstrom made 26 saves on 30 Monsters shots.
The Rampage (4-8-0-0) will return to the AT&T Center for a Lone Star Faceoff contest against their in-state rivals, the Texas Stars, at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
