Portland Pirates News Release

Springfield, Massachusetts - Nine different Springfield skaters registered a point and three third period goals helped lead the Falcons to a 4-1 victory over the Portland Pirates in front of 3,505 at the MassMutual Center.

Cam Atkinson, Martin St. Pierre, Ryan Russell and Andrew Joudrey each found the back of the net for Springfield as they raised their record to 7-6-0-0 on the season.

Michael Stone earned the lone tally, breaking a personal eight-game pointless streak, for Portland as they dropped to 4-7-0-1.

The Falcons got on the board first just over four minutes into the opening frame, when Atkinson beat McElhinney top-shelf while all alone in front of the crease. While on a power play with three minutes remaining in the first, Stone blasted a shot from the right circle past Springfield goaltender Danny Taylor to even the score at one. During the second period, Portland's penalty killing unit killed off 10 minutes worth of penalties to keep the game even heading into the third frame. In the final frame Springfield made the most of their time skating at even strength and while a man down, with St. Pierre giving the hosts their second lead of the game with a high stick-side wrist-shot at the 4:07 mark and Russell knocking in his fifth of the season just over a minute later on a rebound to extend the Falcons to two. With less than seven minutes remaining in the game, Joudrey raced down the ice and notched an unassisted shorthanded tally to seal the victory.

The Falcons out-shot the Pirates by a 30-20 margin as Taylor received the victory in net for Springfield, improving his record to 5-2-0 on the season. McElhinney dropped his third straight start and is now 2-6-0.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were all from Springfield: 1. Russell; 2. Joudrey; 3. Atkinson.
