Norfolk, VA - For the second straight game, the Sound Tigers needed extra time to decide an outcome and once again they earned the extra point, this time in a shootout victory over the Norfolk Admirals, 3-2. Tyler Haskins scored both goals in regulation and Robin Figren scored the decisive game-winner in the shootout for the Sound Tigers. With the win, the Sound Tigers extend their winning streak to four games and improve their record to 31-27-3-6, giving them 71 points, two up on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Norfolk controlled the majority of play in the first period, but it was the Sound Tigers tallying the first goal of the game. Mark Flood took the initial shot from the left half boards, intending to thread the puck through traffic but the shot never made Admirals' starting goalie, Dustin Tokarski. With the puck sitting loose in the slot after deflecting off a skate, Haskins picked it up and made a move around an aggressive Tokarski, sliding the puck into the net for his seventh goal of the season.
Sound Tigers' starter, Scott Munroe faced a barrage of shots, with the Admirals' best chance coming from forward Ryan Craig, who tried to redirect a pass from in front under Munroe but the Sound Tiger net-minder was able to cover up. Before Craig could take another swipe at a rebound, Munroe tied it up, forcing a face-off.
After he was denied at the end of the opening 20 minutes, Craig did not let down, tying the score for Norfolk, 1:34 into the second period. Adam Hall and Dana Tyrell had the assists on Craig's 20th tally of the season.
The aggressive play throughout the game, really boiled over in the third, and 3:34 into the final frame, the Admirals had their first lead of the contest. Tyrell took the puck into the Sound Tigers' zone along the left-wing boards and found Hall streaking through the middle lane. Hall took Tyrell's pass and snapped the puck low to the glove side of Munroe for his 13th tally of the season.
With about eight minutes remaining in regulation time, the Sound Tigers needed a break to tie the score and got just that when an Admirals clearing attempt deflected off of referee, Ian Croft and onto the stick of Sean Bentivoglio. The Sound Tiger winger, sent a quick shot on net that Tokarski could not control his rebound on and Haskins was right there to put in his eighth of the year and second of the game to tie the score at two apiece.
The overtime session belonged to the Sound Tigers who were energized off Haskins' late goal. With a little over two minutes remaining in extra session, Jeremy Reich found line-mate Jesse Joensuu in the slot but Tokarski made a tremendous save to send the contest to a shootout.
Munroe shut the door from there, stopping all five Admiral shooters. Figren won it on a tremendous move that sent Tokarski to one side of the net while the Sound Tiger forward slid the puck over the goal-line.
Munroe made 28 saves on 30 shots for his 15th win this season while Tokarski turned aside 26 of the 28 shots he faced.
The Sound Tigers take on the Admirals on Saturday night to close out the season series. For group discounted tickets or information on any Sound Tiger upcoming home game, contact the team's front office at (203) 334-4625 or e-mail info@soundtigers.com.
