Pirates Blank Monarchs To Snap Losing Streak

Portland, Maine - Brad Larsen and Tyler Ennis each scored a goal and an assist and Jhonas Enroth turned aside all 29 shots he faced as the Portland Pirates beat the Manchester Monarchs 4-0 in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 5,556 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Jeff Cowan and Paul Byron also scored for the Pirates, who ended a three game losing streak with the win. Portland improved to 36-21-5-3 on the season and moved four points ahead of the Monarchs in the race for second in the Atlantic Division.

Manchester dropped to 34-24-3-5 with the loss.

Larsen netted the lone goal of the first on a late power play to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead after one. The Pirates scored three more in the second as Cowan, Byron and Ennis helped Portland surge into a 4-0 advantage after two.

The shutout was the fifth of the season for Enroth.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were all from the Pirates. Larsen was the first, Enroth the second and Ennis the third.

The Pirates continue a three-game weekend tomorrow (Saturday) when the Binghamton Senators visit on Retro Night at the CCCC. The Pirates will wear 1993-1994 AHL championship jerseys, sponsored by Bath Savings Institution, and after the game fans will be able to bid on select jerseys at portlandpirates.com. 1993-94 team members Kent Hulst and Jeff Nelson will be in attendance at the game and the Portland Press Herald will be distributing a reprint of the front page from the Press Herald following the Calder Cup-clinching game. Special 1993-94 ticket pricing is in effect for the game, $8 for Quarter Deck and $10 for Main Deck. It's also a Labatt Blue Light Hockey Night in Portland with Labatt Blue Light specials at Binga's Stadium, Brian Boru, Frosty Pint and Spring Point Tavern before and after the game. Salty Pete's Treasure Chest filled with over $500 in prizes will be up for grabs. Fill out a survey at Customer Service to win. The game can also be seen live on Time Warner Cable Sports.

Sunday (March 14th) Pirates fans are encouraged to show their support for local charities by bringing teddy bears to the game. As a part of this annual charity event, fans will celebrate the first Pirates goal of the game by tossing their teddies onto the ice. State Farm will also be on hand to pass out 1,000 Bear Print Pamphlets and 500 hackey sacks. All Teddy Bears collected will be donated to local charities, including The Center for Grieving Children and Mid Coast Hospital. It's also a Sudzie Family Five Pack Game. Five Main Deck tickets, five hot dogs or pizza slices, five sodas, one Daily Scroll game program, and one free Sudzie Minuteman exterior car wash all for only $60. That's less than half the $123 value.
