West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

FORT WAYNE, IN - Matt Hall continued his incredible first half as the West Michigan Whitecaps picked up an 8-3 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Parkview Field Monday night.

The Whitecaps were forced to battle from behind in the first game of this three-game series, as Fort Wayne posted a pair of runs in a first inning highlighted by a run-scoring double from Austin Allen. West Michigan didn't waste much time in tying the game an inning later with two runs, then an RBI-single by Shane Zeile in the third put the 'Caps ahead for good. Zeile ended up leaving the game in the fourth with an injury and was replaced by Arvicent Perez. The Whitecaps added two more runs in the fifth featuring a run-scoring single by Jose Azocar, and three in the sixth when Jose Zambrano, Cam Gibson and Derek Hill walked to begin the inning, and came around to score later in the frame.

Meanwhile, Hall (8-0) was outstanding once again, tossing six innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out four. After allowing the two-run TinCaps first, Hall twirled five straight scoreless innings to finish his appearance. The win gives Hall his eighth win, and makes the southpaw the first pitcher in the Midwest League with eight wins.

TinCaps starting pitcher Jerry Keel (3-5) suffered his fifth loss of the season after allowing three runs in three innings. Jordan Smith and Logan Longwith tossed the final three innings in relief to finish the ballgame. The Whitecaps improve to 36-25, but by virtue of both South Bend and Lake County winning on Monday, the 'Caps fail to gain ground in their pursuit for a playoff spot, remaining a game back of first place. The TinCaps fall to 35-29 on the season. Maddox, Zeile and Azocar all chipped in with two hits in the victory.
