CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - In a wire-to-wire victory Monday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium, the Burlington Bees defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-1, to begin a three-game series. The Kernels were handed their season-high fifth straight loss in Monday's opener.

Burlington (31-33) quickly jumped out to a lead in the first inning. Jared Foster drew a leadoff walk, and Angelo Amendolare was hit by a pitch from Cedar Rapids southpaw Sam Clay. Brendon Sanger came up next, hitting a two-run double that drove in both baserunners for a 2-0 Bees advantage.

The Bees extended their lead to 3-0 during the top of the fourth. Michael Hermosillo kept the inning alive with a two-out double and moved to third base after a balk. Ranyelmy Alberto produced an RBI infield single to bring Hermosillo home.

Kernels infielder Sean Miller added to a lengthy hit streak and put Cedar Rapids (33-30) on the scoreboard in the fifth. With one out and Luis Arraez at second base, Miller bounced an RBI single into left field against Burlington right-hander Joe Gatto that scored Arraez and cut the Kernels' deficit to 3-1. Miller secured a nine-game hit streak with his base hit in the fifth inning.

Gatto retired the final two batters that he faced before the Bees' bullpen took over. Burlington relievers retired the first 11 batters that they faced as part of an overall streak of 13 consecutive Kernels retired. Aaron Cox and Samuel Holland were both perfect in relief while Zach Hartman's only blemish was a two-out walk in the bottom of the ninth.

Foster capped the scoring in the eighth, giving Burlington its winning margin of 5-1. The bases were loaded for Foster, and on a two-out, full-count offering, he ripped an RBI single up the middle that scored Jordan Serena and Hermosillo.

Monday's winning pitcher was Gatto, who pushed his record to 3-7. Clay took the loss and slipped to 4-3. Cox and Holland were credited with their second and first holds of the season, respectively.

This three-game series continues at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.
