BOWLING GREEN, KY - Micheal Velasquez didn't record a perfect game but still shut down the South Bend Cubs 6-0 Sunday at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Velasquez, who took advantage of his first start in three weeks, retired the first 19 South Bend batters he faced before giving up a clean single to P.J. Higgins with one out in the seventh inning.

Velasquez (1-6) fired seven shutout innings and allowed just one hit. The one base hit was the lowest total for South Bend in a game this season.

South Bend starter Carson Sands (5-1) had his shortest outing of the year, two innings. Sands recorded a perfect first inning but in the second inning allowed three hits and walked three while allowing three runs

Michael Russell's fifth home of the year off reliever Greyfer Eregua in the fourth inning extended the Hot Rods lead to 5-0.

South Bend loaded the bases in the top of the eighth on three walks but Robert Caro hit a long drive to right field caught at the base of the wall.

The South Bend Cubs open a three-game set at Dayton tonight at 7:00pm(ET) on 96.1fm WSBT. Adbert Alzolay (4-3, 4.36)

The Cubs start Monday with a half a game lead over Lake County and a one-game advantage over West Michigan with 7 games left in the Midwest League's first half.
