Loons Lackluster in Doubleheader Defeat

LANSING, Mich. - Strong starting pitching by the Lansing Lugnuts stymied the Loons bats and Lansing took a pair of games, 4-1 and 11-1, from Great Lakes on an overcast Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Game one commenced at 5:37 p.m. eastern with right-hander Jordan Romano (W, 1-0) on the hill against the Loons. Pitching in his first game since August 29, 2014, Romano tossed a complete game and allowed two hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. He allowed a solo home run to Brendon Davis in the fourth inning.

Davis' homer was his second in as many games and briefly tied the game at 1-1. Lansing took the lead for good against Great Lakes righty Imani Abdullah (L, 0-2) on a sacrifice fly from lefty Connor Panas. The Lugnuts scored a single tally in each of the final three innings en route to a 4-1 win in game one.

The nightcap began favorably for the Loons against Blue Jays 2015 first-round draft choice, righty Jon Harris (W, 5-1). Fellow right-hander Ariel Sandoval drove in his team-best 38th RBI on a fielder's choice in the 1st inning, but the Loons failed to advance runners from second and third and settled for a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning.

After the bumpy start, Harris shut the Loons down and allowed one additional hit over his five innings of work. Harris walked three and struck out seven.

Great Lakes committed two errors in the bottom of the 1st inning and Lansing tied the game on a wild pitch from right-hander Nolan Long (L, 2-6).

In the second, lefty leadoff hitter Jake Thomas gave the home team a permanent advantage with an RBI single up the middle. A solo home run from switch-hitter Juan Kelly placed the Loons in a 3-1 hole. Lansing opened the game up with a four-run 5th inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from lefty Connor Panas.

The Lugs scored four more runs in the 6th inning, while the Loons registered two hits in each leg of the doubleheader.

An extended five-game series against Lansing continues on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Pregame coverage begins on ESPN 100.9-FM at 6:35 p.m. A pair of Midwest League All-Stars start for their respective teams. Right-hander Dennis Santana takes the ball for the Loons against southpaw Angel Perdomo.
