Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - A six-run fifth inning for the Rochester Red Wings (57-55) was too much to overcome for the Gwinnett Braves (59-52) in a 7-5 defeat on Thursday at Coolray Field. The loss snapped Gwinnett's season-best six-game winning streak.

The G-Braves also fell in the International League Wild Card standings to 2.5 games behind the Columbus Clippers, who beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 7-6.

Gwinnett scored in three of the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead, but they gave that back plus some in a six-run fifth inning that saw 11 Red Wings' batters come to the plate. Gwinnett right-handed starter Tyrell Jenkins faced the first seven batters of that inning and gave up the first five runs.

Jenkins (L, 3-2) walked two and allowed three hits in the inning, including a three-run double by Reynaldo Rodriguez and a solo home run by Danny Ortiz that knocked him out of the game. He finished with 4.2 innings pitched, allowed five runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out two.

The Red Wings scored their final run of the fifth against right-handed reliever David Carpenter, as he allowed a double and RBI single to the first two batters he faced. Carpenter also walked a batter but induced a groundout to end the inning.

Gwinnett narrowed the deficit back to one run in the sixth when Jordan Lennerton hit a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Sean Kazmar, who had drawn a one-out walk from Red Wings' right-handed reliever Alex Meyer.

The G-Braves' first four runs came against left-handed starter Jason Wheeler. He also gave up seven hits with no walks and one strikeout in 4.0 innings. Meyer (W, 4-5) yielded a run on three hits over 3.0 innings, walked two and struck out one.

Right-hander Mark Hamburger (H, 7) got the first two outs of the eighth inning with one hit allowed, and left-hander Aaron Thompson (H, 2) got the final out. Righty Michael Tonkin (S, 9) pitched a perfect ninth and had one strikeout to end the game.

For the G-Braves, right-hander Vin Mazzaro tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout, two hits allowed, a walk, and a hit batsman. Righty Carlos Fisher gave up an unearned run in the eighth inning that gave Rochester its final two-run advantage. Fisher allowed one hit and a walk with two strikeouts. Right-hander Jason Hursh set the Red Wings down in order in the ninth in his Triple-A debut.

Kazmar was a key contributor in the G-Braves' final three runs and finished the night 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. He drove in the first run of the fourth inning with a double, scored on the first of Jose Yepez's two singles of the game and also scored the only run of the sixth.

Smith stole his 40th base of the season, 17th with Gwinnett after a one-out single in the third inning and scored on a single to center field by Christian Bethancourt, who joined Smith, Kazmar and Yepez as one of four G-Braves' batters to record two hits.

Five batters had two hits for Rochester, including Rodriguez, who went 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBIs.

The G-Braves will continue the homestand on Friday at Coolray Field with the opener of a three-game series against the Buffalo Bisons, the Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will start left-hander Greg Smith (4-4, 2.34 ERA), while Buffalo will counter with right-hander Phillippe Aumont (3-4, 2.54 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Friday is "Princess Night" at Coolray Field, as characters Elsa, Anna and Olaf from the movie Frozen will be at the stadium. The night will conclude with a Frozen-themed fireworks display for "Fireworks Friday."
