(Pawtucket, RI) - Syracuse starter Paolo Espino pitched eight shutout innings while Matt den Dekker and Kevin Keyes hit solo home runs to spoil an otherwise solid Triple-A debut by William Cuevas as the Chiefs blanked the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-0, on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series before 8,765 fans at McCoy Stadium.

Espino (4-5) allowed seven hits but no walks while striking out six batters and throwing 108 pitches. Sam Runion pitched a scoreless ninth inning as Syracuse (47-67) defeated Pawtucket (44-68) for the fourth straight time this week and seventh consecutive meeting overall.

Cuevas (0-1) pitched well, giving up just four hits and two runs, all earned, while walking two and striking out five in seven innings of work. den Dekker (4) homered with one out in the first inning, then after Cuevas held Syracuse scoreless through the next four frames Keyes to put the Chiefs in front 2-0 with his solo blast with two outs in the sixth (5).

Dayan Diaz pitched a scoreless eighth for Pawtucket, but then the right-hander permitted two runs in the top of the ninth to provide Syracuse some insurance. Caleb Ramsey's RBI single pushed the lead to 3-0, while the final Chiefs run scored on a double play off the bat of Steve Lerud.

The PawSox put runners in scoring position in the fourth (Garin Cecchini double), fifth (Jeff Bianchi single and Matt Spring double), seventh (Deven Marrero double and Jemile Weeks single), eighth (Quintin Berry single, advanced on groundout) and ninth (Weeks walk, advanced on defensive indifference).
