Buxton to Begin Rehab Assignment Friday

ROCHESTER, NY - One of baseball's top prospects is set to join the Red Wings on Friday as Byron Buxton will begin a rehab assignment with Rochester in Charlotte.

Buxton, ranked preseason as the top prospect in baseball by MLB.com and the second-best preseason prospect by Baseball America entering 2015, began the season with Double-A Chattanooga before he was promoted to Minnesota on June 13. He appeared in 59 games with the Lookouts and hit .283/.351/.489 with seven doubles, 12 triples and six home runs. Buxton scored 44 runs and drove in 37 with Chattanooga.

He made his Major League debut on June 14 at Texas and scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning while finishing 0-for-4. His first MLB hit was a triple in the eighth inning the following night at St. Louis. In 11 games with the Twins, Buxton hit .189/.231/.270 with a double, a triple and five runs scored.

Byron sprained his left thumb trying to steal second on June 23 vs. Chicago-AL. He finished the game and played the following day, striking out four times against Chris Sale, before he was placed on the disabled list on June 26.

Rochester plays three games this weekend in Charlotte, NC before playing five games in four days in Buffalo from Monday-Thursday. The Red Wings return home on Friday, August 14 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to begin a six-game homestand. MLB rehab assignments for position players can last up to 20 days.
