Ryan Tosses Shutout as Hens Steal Win
August 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
In the final Battle of the Breakfast of the season, the Mud Hens fried the bacon in a pitchers' duel at Fifth Third Field. Runs were at a premium in the game, and the Hens were able to scratch across the only one of the game to earn a 1-0 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. In the process, Toledo snapped a six game losing streak and avoided being swept for the second time all season.
Kyle Ryan was locked in on the mound for the Hens. Searching for his first win of the season, Ryan came out and cruised through the first inning on only 10 pitches, striking out Brian Bogusevic to end the inning. In the second, he walked his first batter of the evening, but was able to induce a ground ball for a tailor made double play.
Ryan ran into trouble in the third, but didn't give in to the IronPigs. Three straight singles started the inning, but he was able to induce a ground ball from Tyler Henson right back to the mound that Ryan threw to catcher Bryan Holaday for the force out at home. Holaday then threw to Marc Krauss at first base for a classic one-two-three double play. Ryan ended the threat for good with a strikeout of Chase d'Arnaud.
The Mud Hens' offense struggled off of Lehigh Valley's starter Anthony Vasquez, but was able to get something going in the fourth inning. Dixon Machado got the train moving with a walk, and then Marc Krauss and Mike Hessman moved it along with singles to load the bases. Steven Moya then singled through the hole between short and third, scoring Machado. However, Krauss, being waved home on the hit, was thrown out at home by the IronPigs' left fielder Kelly Dugan. Regardless, Toledo was able to go forward in the game with a 1-0 lead.
Ryan took care of the rest after that. After a tough third inning, he went into cruise control mode for his final five innings. Overall, Ryan tossed eight innings of shutout baseball while striking out eight IronPigs' hitters. Guido Knudson relieved Ryan in the ninth, and locked down his eighth save of the season to seal the Hens' victory.
The Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders come to town on Friday to take on the Hens in a three game weekend series. First game is Friday night at 7 p.m.
