Charlotte Knights News Release

(Uptown Charlotte, NC) - In a battle of major-league-experienced pitchers, 38-year-old Randy Wolf came out on top over 37-year-old Brad Penny as the Buffalo Bisons take the series finale 9-2 over the Charlotte Knights on Thursday night. The Bisons also claimed the series victory with the win, taking two of three.

A night after the Charlotte offense exploded for five runs in the first inning, it was the Buffalo offense that jumped ahead early with a three-run first frame. The team did not look back as Wolf took over and led the Bisons to a 9-2 victory in the rubber match.

The veteran left-hander scattered seven hits as he cruised through six shutout innings. The Knights were able to tally a pair of runs off of the former National League All-Star in the seventh inning however, as three consecutive two-out hits cut the Bisons lead to 8-2, and Wolf was relieved by Chad Jenkins after 6.2 innings pitched. The 15-year major league veteran still earned his eighth win of the season.

Dalton Pompey led off the game with one of his three hits on the day, and scored the game's first run when he came in to score on International League batting leader Matt Hague's RBI-ground-out. An Alex Hassan sacrifice-fly and a Ty Kelly RBI-single followed, giving the Bisons a three-run advantage through a half-inning of play.

Buffalo added three more runs against Penny over his six innings of work, with Andy Burns delivering an RBI-double in the sixth frame to score Hassan and put the visitors ahead 6-0. Penny surrendered six runs on ten hits in the outing, and was saddled with his sixth loss of the season.

The Bisons took their largest lead of the game when Luke Scott delivered a two-run homer off of Miguel Chalas in the top of the seventh frame to give Buffalo an 8-0 advantage.

Rob Brantly led the Knights 10-hit attack with his 3-for-4 night, including an RBI-single in the seventh inning that scored Justin Sellers to put Charlotte on the 'board. Jason Coats then added to his team-leading RBI total - now 68 - by scoring Brantly with an RBI-double to bring the Knights within a score of 8-2.

Hague added the final Bisons run with his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot in the top of the ninth inning. The IL batting-leader upped his average to .342 on the season with his 2-for-4 night, including a pair of RBI and three runs scored.

The Knights will continue their ten-game homestand with the first game of a weekend series against the Rochester Red Wings on Friday night. Scott Carroll is set to take the mound for Charlotte in the 7:05 p.m. matchup, and will make his 11th start for the Knights this season. Fans are encouraged to stick around after the game for Friday Knight Fireworks, presented by BB&T and 107.9 The Link.
