Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls came back from an early three-run deficit to defeat the Indianapolis Indians 8-5 Thursday night at the DBAP in the finale of a four-game set.
The Indians jumped on the Bulls quickly, as two batters into the game Gustavo Nunez launched a solo homer - his second in as many nights - over the Blue Monster for a 1-0 lead. Durham came right back in the bottom of the inning though, as Boog Powell walked to lead things off, and scored three batters later on an RBI single by Taylor Motter.
The Tribe retook the lead in the third inning, as Alen Hanson walked with one out and later scored on a triple by Elias Diaz. In the fourth the visitors extended their lead, when Dan Gamache singled home Jaff Decker, and Hanson drove in Josh Bell on a single to centerfield.
From there though Durham (54-58) stormed back with seven unanswered runs, scoring three times in the fifth, two times in the sixth and twice in the seventh. In the fifth stanza the Bulls sent eight men to the plate, as Joey Rickard scored on a wild pitch, JP Arencibia delivered an RBI single and Hak-Ju Lee bunted for a two-out RBI single to tie the game.
The Bulls took the lead for good in the sixth, as Corey Brown delivered a two-run single to rightfield. The home side extended its lead in the seventh inning, when Luke Maile blasted a two-run homer over the Blue Monster as Durham opened up a four-run advantage.
In the ninth the Indians (65-48) threatened, loading the bases with nobody out. However Scott Diamond, in his fourth inning of relief, induced a pop out, sac fly and line out to close out the game and earn a split of the four-game set.
Diamond (10-5) picked up the win with four scoreless innings out of the bullpen in relief of the rehabbing Drew Smyly, who allowed four earned runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. AJ Morris (5-2) suffered the loss for the visitors, allowing two runs over five hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
The Bulls' 10-game homestand continues Friday when they open up a three-game set with the Louisville Bats. LHP Matt Moore (0-2, 4.35) is scheduled to start for Durham opposite RHP Robert Stephenson (4-0, 2.25) for Louisville. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the DBAP.
