Rodriguez, Wings Rally to Beat Braves
August 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings used a six-run fifth inning to rally past the Gwinnett Braves 7-5 Thursday night in Georgia. With the win, the Wings pulled to within 4 1/2 games of first place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Jason Wheeler made his first start since returning from Double-A Chattanooga, and faced the hottest team in the league in the Braves - winners of six straight, and 11 out of 12 games. Gwinnett used a one-out infield hit, a single, and a fielder's choice to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
G-Braves starter Tyrell Jenkins lost to the Wings in Rochester July 22, but came into Thursday's game having allowed just one earned over his last two starts (14 innings pitched). The Wings loaded the bases against Jenkins with two outs in the second inning, but Jenkins got a groundball out to escape trouble.
The Wings had the tying run at third base with two out again in the third inning, after Reynaldo Rodriguez singled, stole second then moved to third on a throwing error. Jenkins got Oswaldo Arcia to chase a high fastball for strike three and the third out.
A two-out RBI single by Christian Bethancourt in the third inning extended the Braves' lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Gwinnett moved ahead 4-0 on RBI hits by Sean Kazmar and Jose Yepez.
The Wings once again loaded the bases against Jenkins with one out in the fifth inning. That's when Rodriguez drilled a 3-1 pitch into the left field corner for a bases-clearing double, making the score 4-3. Jenkins struck out Arcia on a wild pitch, with Rodriguez heading to third then hustling home when catcher Jose Yepez had to throw to first base to put out Arcia. Rodriguez' alertness and hustle tied the score at 4-4; when Danny Ortiz followed with a long home run, the Wings were up 5-4 and Jenkins was knocked out of the game. A double by Xavier Avery off reliever David Carpenter, and an RBI hit from Eric Farris, extended the lead to 6-4.
Jenkins (3-2) worked 4 2/3 innings and allowed seven hits and five earned runs, walking three and striking out two. He threw 93 pitches, 51 for strikes.
Wheeler pitched four innings and allowed seven hits and four earned runs, with no walks and one strikeout. He threw 82 pitches, 54 for strikes.
Alex Meyer took over on the mound for the bottom of the sixth, and the Braves edged closer to the Wings. After a pair of one-out hits, a sacrifice fly by Jordan Lennerton added a run and made the score 6-5.
The Red Wings loaded the bases for the third time in the seventh inning, with two outs against reliever Vin Mazzaro. Carlos Paulino grounded out to short to end the scoring chance.
The Wings added a run off Carlos Fischer in the eighth inning. Danny Santana singled to start the inning, stole second base, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by James Beresford, making the score 7-5.
Meyer (4-5) allowed one run and three hits in three relief innings, walking two and striking out one. Mark Hamburger worked the eighth inning, allowing a single sandwiched around two outs before being lifted in favor of Aaron Thompson. A fly ball out got Thompson and the Wings out of the eighth with their two-run lead.
Michael Tonkin pitched the ninth inning. Tonkin struck out Mallex Smith to end the game and pick up his ninth save of the season.
The Wings out-hit the Braves 12-11.
