Big Fifth Inning Leads to Third Straight Loss

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Gwinnett scored four runs in the fifth inning to beat the Rochester Red Wings 4-3 Wednesday night at Coolray Field.

The Red Wings (56-55) led 3-0 entering the fifth after scoring twice in the first and once in the top of the fifth. Oswaldo Arcia had an RBI in each frame and Xavier Avery had a two-out RBI single in the first against Braves (59-51) starter Kanekoa Texeira (4-3).

Rochester would only get one baserunner from the sixth inning on, a leadoff single by Chris Herrmann in the ninth inning. Texeira worked 6.0 innings, Ryan Weber tossed 2.0 perfect frames and Peter Moylan recorded his fourth save, second in this series, with a scoreless ninth for Gwinnett.

Red Wings starter Taylor Rogers (8-9) was cruising through four innings having allowed just two hits but the Braves used five singles, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to plate the four runs. Rogers was charged with four runs on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Mark Hamburger extended his scoreless streak to 12.1 innings with a perfect eighth inning for the Red Wings. Reynaldo Rodriguez had three extra-base hits in the loss and leads the league with 48 hits for extra bases this season.

Rochester has lost nine of its last 10 road games and fallen 5.5 games behind the division lead.

Next up: LHP Jason Wheeler makes his first start with the Red Wings since June 18 when the series with the Gwinnett Braves wraps up Thursday night at 6:35 p.m.
