Guerrero, Fields Homer in 4-3 Herd Loss
September 2, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
Roemon Fields and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. both homered for the Bisons, but the team saw their losing streak reach 10 following a 4-3 defeat to the Syracuse Chiefs on Sunday night from NBT Bank Stadium. Chiefs starter Austin Voth carried a perfect game into the sixth inning and the Herd went the duration of the contest without a hit with runners in scoring position.
The losing streak is just the third time in the modern era Buffalo has lost 10 in a row, matching stretches in 1994 and in June of last season. In both previous cases, the Bisons ended the streak at 10... the task that awaits the team in Monday's season finale at 1:05 p.m.
The story early in the game was Voth, who carried a perfect game two outs into the top of the sixth inning. The Syracuse righty was two strikes away from making it through the Bisons order twice without allowing a base runner, but Fields ended the perfect game, no-hitter and shutout with one swing. The Herd's number nine hitter pulled a no-doubt home run over the wall in right for his second home run of the season.
Voth continued his outing into the seventh inning, where he allowed Guerrero's home run, an opposite field blast. It was Vladdy's first Herd home run on the road as his previous five had all been at Coca-Cola Field.
Voth struck out seven and naturally walked none in his great performance, improving to 6-8 on the season.
But Buffalo was in no way out of this contest. They had the bases loaded in the seventh, but reliever Trevor Gott hit the outside corner of the plate to catch Jason Leblebijian looking. The first two in the ninth reached as well with Dwight Smith Jr. doubling and scoring the third Buffalo run when first baseman Chris Dominguez misplayed Reese McGuire's grounder. With a runner on third and only one out, Austin Adams struck out Leblebijian and got a fly ball from Fields to end the game.
Syracuse got on the board first, scoring a trio of unearned runs on Buffalo starter Jacob Waguespack in the third inning. After loading the bases without an out, Jacob Wilson grounded a ball to right that was misplayed into an error by Guerrero, allowing the Chiefs' first run. A second came around when Jose Marmolejos grounded into a doubleplay that should've ended the rally. A thorn in the Bisons side all series, Yadiel Hernandez followed with a single through the right side for the 3-0 lead.
Waguespack allowed just one earned run over 6.2 innings but fell to 5-9 on the season in combined action with the Bisons and IronPigs.
