Grrrowl Involved in Seven-Player, Four-Team Trade
February 26, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Grrrowl News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. â The Greenville Grrrowl of the East Coast Hockey League on Tuesday traded defenseman ERIC VAN ACKER to the Pensacola Ice Pilots (ECHL) for Kevin Bergin and Chad Theuer. Bergin was then packaged with ALEX BURROWS, and the two were dealt by Greenville to the Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL) for defensemen Wes Blevins and Chris Wismer. Burrows was then traded by the Cyclones to the Baton Rouge Kingfish for Jason Norrie. The ECHL trade deadline is Wednesday at 3:00 PM.
So the Grrrowl will add CHAD THEUER, WES BLEVINS and CHRIS WISMER to the roster in time for Friday's game in North Charleston against the South Carolina Stingrays.
"All four teams involved in these deals addressed their specific needs", said Grrrowl VP of Hockey Operations and Head Coach JOHN MARKS. "I felt we needed to add some experience on the blueline, and we definitely did that with the addition of Blevins and Wismer. Theuer had great offensive numbers last season as a senior at Northern Michigan University (55 points in 40 games), and was having a good rookie season in Pensacola. Everyone from the owner to the coaches and staff are committed to making the playoff this season, and these moves make us a better team."
BLEVINS, a 6'0", 205 pound defenseman, is in his third full professional season out of the Rochester Institue of Technology (R.I.T.). The Westland, Michigan native recorded 2-2-4 points and 52 penalty minutes in 50 games with the Cincinnati Cyclones this season. WISMER, a 6'2", 190 pound defenseman, is in his 5th season and has played with the ECHL's Roanoke Express, Dayton Bombers, Jackson Bandits, Pensacola Ice Pilots, Toledo Storm, Florida Everblades and Cincinnati Cyclones since turning pro in 1998.
THEUER, a 5'10", 190 forward, is in his first professional season out of Northern Michigan University. The Clarkston, Michigan native recorded 45-103-148 points and 146 penalty minutes in 156 career games at N.M.U. This season, he scored 8-25-33 points and 20 penalty minutes in 52 games with Pensacola.
Greenville's next game is scheduled for Friday night at 7:30 PM in North Charleston against the South Carolina Stingrays (Newsradio 1330 & 950, WORD).
The Grrrowl return home Saturday to host the Pee Dee Pride at 7:05 PM (no local radio coverage). Tickets are available at the BI-LO Center Box Office and all TicketMaster outlets. Log onto www.grrrowl.com for more information.
