Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA- Johnstown Chiefs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Toby O'Brien announced today, that they have acquired forward Jason Shmyr from the Dayton Bombers for forward Jim Leger. In another move, the Chiefs traded defenseman Phil Roy to the Augusta Lynx for future considerations involving three players at the conclusion of the 2002-03 season. The ECHL trading deadline was at 3:00 p.m. today.

Shmyr, 27, the brother of Chiefs left wing Ryan Shmyr, was traded from the Lynx to the Bombers earlier in the day. In 32 games with Augusta this season, he had 6 goals, 11 points and 161 PIM. He began the season with the AHL's Manitoba Moose, appearing four games. The 6'4, 200 LBS native of Fairview, Alberta is in his seventh pro season having skated with the Anchorage (WCHL), Pensacola (ECHL), San Diego (WCHL), Utah (IHL), Long Beach (IHL), Portland (AHL), and last season with Houston (AHL). In 387 pro hockey games, Shmyr has 25 goals, 60 points, and 1,703 PIM.

"The ability to pick up a proven AHL/IHL player like Jason Shmyr, along with the grit and competitiveness he brings ice every night, was something we could not pass up. The chance to play with his brother Ryan, both of whom play a similar game should be exciting for them, for our hockey club, and for our fans. To make the playoffs we are going to have to battle so I would like to go to battle with warriors," O'Brien added.

Roy, 26, was leading all Chiefs defenseman in scoring with 11 goals and 30 points in 56 games. He appeared in one scoreless game with the Cleveland Barons (AHL) earlier in the season. Last season, Roy had 5 goals and 38 points in 63 games for Johnstown.

"With the prospects of Phil Roy pursuing opportunities to play in Europe next season, and us currently having seven capable defensemen, five of whom that have played in Saint John this season,' said O'Brien. 'It made sense to the overall organization to acquire the rights to solid young players who will help us next season. Phil was a perfect gentleman and a good member of this team and we will miss him in our locker room."

Leger, 26, had 12 goals and 21 points in 30 games this season for the Chiefs. Leger made his debut with the Chiefs during the 2000-01 season. In 129 career games with the Chiefs, he had 31 goals and 74 points.

"It is tough to see Jim go. He has been a positive addition to our club for the last two and a half seasons, and we all wish him well in Dayton," O'Brien said.

The Chiefs travel to Lexington this Friday night to take on the Men O'War. The Chiefs return to home ice Saturday night (7:30 p.m.) when they host the Wheeling Nailers, and Sunday afternoon the Dayton Bombers (2:30 p.m.). To order tickets call (814) 536-5156 or 1-800-CHF-TIXX.
