Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City- The Utah Grizzlies will open their 10th season when they face off against the San Antonio Rampage tonight at 7:05pm at the 'E' Center.
On hand for the opening game festivities will be U.S. Olympic Medallists Cammi Granato, Joey Cheek, Jean Racine, Nikki Stone, Shannon Barhke and Tracy Evans.
Returning to the Grizzlies roster this season is veteran center Jarrod Skalde who played 77 games for Utah during the 1999-00 season when he led the Grizzlies in both assists and points. Skalde has played 115 games in the NHL scoring 34 points with 62 penalty minutes.
Utah and San Antonio met eight times last season, each winning four contests. In the most recent meeting on March 24th, the Grizzlies came away with a 4-2 win on the road. This will be San Antonio's first visit to the 'E' Center since Dec. 13, 2002 when Grizzlies goaltender Jason Bacashihua turned away 34 shots, helping Utah blank the Rampage 2-0.
San Antonio (36-29-11-4) and Utah (37-34-4-5) had comparable seasons in 2002-03. San Antonio won only 14 of their 40 road games last season with just one victory at the 'E' Center in four tries. Similarly, Utah had 16 road victories in 40 games and also posted only one win in four tries in San Antonio. Both the Grizzlies and the Rampage were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in April.
Center David Gove, added to the Grizzlies roster this season, will face his former San Antonio teammates on Friday. Gove played 72 games for the Rampage last season compiling 15 goals and adding 20 assists with 30 penalty minutes. Current Grizzly Eric Schneider also spent time in a Rampage uniform last season.
The Grizzlies will face-off against the Rampage again on Saturday in San Antonio.
