Open House and Golf Tournament a Success
October 10, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The results are in from the Bakersfield Condors first charity events of the 2003-04 season. The 6th Annual Condors Invitational Golf Tournament and Open House & Family Day were held this past Sunday and Monday, respectively, with both collecting contributions for local charities.
The Open House & Family Day, sponsored by KGET-TV 17, was the first opportunity for fans to check out the new team on the ice. Season ticket holders were able to pick up their ticket books, individual tickets for the Condors pre-season game against Las Vegas went on sale, and there was a "Skate with the Condors" session open to the public. The entire event was free of charge for anyone donating two canned food items. When the counting finished, 1,100 pounds of food had been collected for the Golden Empire Gleaners. Over 1,000 people showed up for the Open House, and over 300 people took part in the public skate.
The Condors annual golf tournament was held on Monday afternoon at Rio Bravo Country Club, with this season's selected recipient of the proceeds being the Boys & Girls Club of Bakersfield. KERN 1410AM, A-Plus Plumbing, Heating & Air, and Chicago Title sponsored the tournament. It featured groups paired up with at least one member of the training camp team. The winning team came in from Frazier Park Lumber, featuring Ray Long, Jeff Odon, John McKiernan and Steve Beardsley, joined by Condors winger Vince Malts. Beardsley also won the Long Drive Competition. The tournament pulled in $3,835.
"We had a wonderful response for both of these early events, and helped make a lot of people's lives here in Bakersfield just a bit better," said Condors GM Chris Freshour. "There's certainly a buzz in the air about Condors Hockey right now, with our first season in the new league right around the corner. We want to thank everyone, the sponsors, season ticket holders and the participants, who made both the Open House and the tournament a success."
