Condors Drop Preseason Opener, 4-2
October 10, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Las Vegas, NV â Marc Magliarditi made 32 saves to backstop the Las Vegas Wranglers to a 4-2 victory over the Bakersfield Condors on Friday night in both teams' preseason debut.
The first period started slowly, but turned physical about seven minutes in. A pair of fights broke out within 18 seconds of each other, starting with Condors winger Vince Malts squaring off with Wranglers defenseman Jonathan Shockey. Later, John Watson lined up for the Condors against Jeff Coulter. Four minutes later, two seconds after a Condors power play expired, Darren Shakotko gave the visitors the lead. C Kevin Riehl fed a cross-ice pass to the left point, and his blast slipped through traffic for the 1-0 score.
The Wranglers answered just 1:12 into the middle frame, taking advantage of an odd-man situation down low. Rookie Dave Cousineau netted the goal to make it 1-1. Magliarditi was the story of the second frame, as he turned aside 12 number of shots during the second period alone. The Condors had their opportunities, with five power plays in the second, but could not convert. With less than five minutes remaining in the second, Vegas made it 2-1 with a redirected shot in front of the net. Two more bouts highlighted the remaining minutes of the second, including Malts' second fight of the match, but the score remained 2-1.
Las Vegas extended the lead 4:15 into the third period, when Greg Day scored on a breakaway to make it 3-1. The Condors pulled within one when Riehl put a shot off the crossbar and in at 8:49 for his second point of the night. But just over a minute later, longtime WCHLer Chris Kenady buried the fourth goal of the game for Las Vegas to make it 4-2. That proved to be the final tally of the contest.
The Condors return home for the second game of their preseason schedule, hosting Las Vegas at 7:00pm at Centennial Garden. Real Rock 104.3 and the Holiday Inn Select sponsor the game. Doors open at 6:00pm.
Saturday also represents the first day for individual game tickets for regular season action. The Garden box office opens at 10:00am and will stay open through game time. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 322-2525 or at any Ticketmaster location.
