Greenville Grrrowl News Release

GREENVILLE, SC – The Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL have announced that RYAN STEWART has been acquired in a trade with the Florida Everblades. Stewart was traded for financial considerations, paving the way for his return to Greenville after a year in England and Florida.

STEWART (6-0, 195lbs.), a Niagara Falls, Ontario native was with the Grrrowl for the first four seasons of the organizations existence (1998-2002), and was a major contributor on the 2001-02 Kelly Cup Championship team in Greenville. Following the 2001-02 season, he signed to play with the Manchester Storm of the BISL, and then returned to the ECHL with the Florida Everblades, and finished the season in Fort Myers.

"To say that we are excited to return home is a understatement," commented Stewart. "There are so many great memories, and life-long friendships in Greenville that makes the community such a special place for me and Lindsay. The opportunity to get back with the Grrrowl is something that has been on my mind for quite some time, and things have finally worked out to make the move a reality. I can't wait to return to the BI-LO Center to play in front of the rabid Grrrowl fans."

Ryan's history in Greenville includes on-ice performance, as well as a tremendous involvement with local charitable causes. He has created a non-profit charitable foundation called the "Stewart Foundation" which focuses on children's charities such as the Meyers Center for Special Children. He took on a task to raise funds for Savannah Grace Duke (medial expenses) during the 2001-02 season by selling "Stewy's Corner" hats at Grrrowl games.

"Ryan will add a great deal to our team, organization and community," stated Grrrowl Head Coach and VP of Hockey Operations, John Marks. "We are working hard to put together a solid club for the upcoming season, and Ryan brings a multitude of abilities to the table. He has been a fan-favorite and I am thrilled that Stewy will wear a familiar jersey in Greenville."

The Grrrowl won the first pre-season game of the 2003-04 campaign with a 5-4 shootout victory in Roanoke on Thursday evening, and will host the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:05pm tonight. Greenville will host the 2nd Annual Dog Day Challenge on Saturday at the BI-LO Center. Charlotte and Greensboro will compete in a round-robin type event beginning at 10am – all tickets are $5 for the day – General Admission seating.
