Grizzlies fall flat against Rampage
April 5, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
The Grizzlies fell to the San Antonio Rampage Friday when Josh Olson and Paul Healey each put up a pair of goals to help the Rampage to the 5-2 decision in front of 6,304. Travis Scott earned the victory with 35 saves. The loss drops the Grizzlies to six points behind Cincinnati in the playoff race with four games left in the regular season.
Utah couldn't keep up with an aggressive Rampage team that managed to get off to a 3-0 lead before the Grizzlies could respond. Denis Shvidki scored on Dan Ellis only 2:14 into the first period. Josh Olson would extend the lead to two getting a second shot past Ellis at the 13:28 mark. Ellis had previously won three of his last four starts only giving up four goals in the three victories. In the second period, the Rampage had the man advantage when they went up 3-0 on a Paul Healey shot that easily found the net when Ellis left his post in an attempt to play the puck.
The Grizzlies finally got on the board when Jeff MacMillan caught the net at 6:12 of the second period. Rob Valicevic and David Gove helped out with assists. However, Josh Olson would make the score 4-1 with his second goal of the night at the 16:59 mark. In the third period the Rampage would outshoot the Grizzlies 17-3 while adding a fifth goal, Healey's second of the night with Olson contributing an assist. Gerard DiCaire put in the Grizzlies' second goal at 9:13 of the third to conclude the scoring. The loss snapped a five-game point streak for the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies saw their playoff hopes edge on the side of slim on Saturday night when they fell to the San Antonio Rampage for the second straight night and for the seventh time in nine games by a final score of 3-1. The loss makes the last three games for Utah must-wins and also puts them in the mercy of other teams as they'll need help in reaching the Calder Cup Playoffs. San Antonio started the scoring with two first period goals the first on a three-on-two break led by Matt Dzieduszycki who found Ryan Jardine for a wrap-around shot and his sixth goal of the season. Josh Olson would add a goal in the periods final 15 seconds giving Travis Scott and the Rampage a
2-0 lead, all that they would need. Utah outshot the Grizzlies 10-7 in the period. The next scoring would come in the third period when Lee Goren knocked one past Dan Ellis giving San Antonio a 3-0 lead. Utah would pull the goalie in the final three minutes and would take advantage as Zenon Konopka knocking a rebound past Scott after a shot by Dan Jancevksi. Barrett Heisten also drew an assist. Utah would keep the extra skater for the remainder of the game but couldn't get anything else past Scott falling 3-1. Utah finished the game outshooting the Rampage 34-22 but Scott earned first star honors making 33 saves in the game earning his 24th win of the season.
