Gomber Earns Second PCL Pitcher of the Week Award

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - Memphis Redbirds starting pitcher Austin Gomber has been named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday.

Earlier this season, the southpaw was named the PCL Pitcher of the Week for April 23-29, and he was also the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April.

During the week, Gomber tossed 14.0 innings and gave up just one run and 11 hits. He struck out 15 and walked only four.

His week begin with 8.0 innings against Oklahoma City last Monday. He worked into the ninth inning before departing, and he struck out nine. Two of the six hits he surrendered came in the first inning and two came in the ninth. From the end of the third through the middle of the sixth, he retired nine-straight Dodgers with five coming via strikeout.

He capped the week last night with 6.0 shutout innings against Colorado Springs, allowing just five hits and fanning six. He was the second-half of two-straight Redbirds shutouts for the first time since June 11-12, 2016.

In nine starts this season, Gomber is 4-3 with a 3.60 ERA. He has 63 strikeouts and 17 walks in 55.0 innings.
