Reno Aces Game Notes at Salt Lake

May 28, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: The Reno Aces enter tonight's contest with a record of 21-30, eight games back of the first place Fresno Grizzlies. Taylor Clarke will take the ball looking for his fourth consecutive win. With just four games left in the month of May, the Aces need three wins over the next four days to have a winning record this month.

About Last Night: Reno's offense didn't show up on Sunday night in Salt Lake City. With just two runs on four hits, the Aces were handed their 30th loss of the season. Cody Decker went 1-for-2 and hit his 196th career home run and Kevin Cron finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Buck Show: On this date in 1998, in the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded and his team leading the Giants 8-6, Diamondbacks' manager Buck Showalter orders that Barry Bonds be intentionally walked with the bases loaded by reliever Gregg Olson. The free pass works when the next batter, Brett Mayne, lines outs to deep center field, giving Arizona an 8-7 victory at Candlestick Park. Arizona went 65-97 in 1998, but rebounded in 1999 with a record of 100-62. 1999 was the only season Showalter managed a team with 100+ wins.

North Shore Monster: Cesar Puello loves hitting in Salt Lake City. Throughout his career, Puello is batting .362 (47-for-130) at Smith's Ballpark with 29 runs scored, 7 doubles, 7 home runs and 24 RBI. As a member of the Bees, Puello hit a remarkable .397 in 44 games with 7 home runs. At Greater Nevada Field this season, he is batting .295 with four runs scored. His home run Saturday night was his first since April 16 at Fresno (41 days ago).

Rare Showing: Aces Skipper Greg Gross and pitching coach Gil Heredia were ejected from last night's contest by home plate umpire Lewis Williams. Heredia has never been ejected in his Aces career and Gross has been ejected twice (7/17/17 vs. Salt Lake and 6/1/13 vs. Tucson). With these ejections last night, Reno now has more this season (4) than in all of last year combined.

Active Minor League Home Run Leaders: Cody Decker enters today's contest with 196 career MiLB homers. Only former Salt Lake Bees infielder Chris Carter (Rochester Red Wings) 205 has more. Last night, Decker went 1-for-2 with a home run. Decker now has eight on the year and 90 in the Pacific Coast League.

*Note does not include Mexican League Home Runs

Dirty 30: The loss last night brings the Aces record to 21-30 through 51 games. Last year, Reno's 30th loss didn't come until game 78 (48-30). The best record Reno has ever had through 51 games is 32-19 (2017) and their worst record is 20-31(2013).
