Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It was a six-hour nail biter, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes swept a doubleheader from the St. Paul Saints on Monday night.

In Game 1, the Goldeyes turned three home runs and a big game-winning double by Justin Bass in extra innings into a 5-4 victory. Then, in Game 2, a timely triple by Kody Kaiser turned out to be the difference as Winnipeg won 3-2 and took a pair at St. Paul's Midway Stadium.

With the two victories, the Goldeyes won their second and third straight games and their fifth and sixth games in their last seven outings as Winnipeg improved to 34-21 - 13 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2009 season (55-41) - and moved into first-place in the American Association's North Division. The Fish now lead the Saints by one full game in the race for first in the division.

In Game 2, the Goldeyes trailed St. Paul 2-1 heading into the fifth when Price Kendall was hit by a pitch and Ridge Carpenter, who replaced the injured Kendall, scored on a triple by Kaiser. Kaiser then scored on an error by Adam Frost and with the help of the bullpen, the Fish held on to win.

Winnipeg, which finished the game with three runs on eight hits, had to come back twice in the contest. The Fish trailed 1-0 when Wes Long doubled home the tying run and then trailed 2-1 when Kaiser became the hero.

Zach Baldwin got the win (4-0, 7.31 ERA) in relief of starter Eugene Wright, while Aaron Hartsock earned the save, his third of the year. Robert Coe suffered the loss (0-1, 5.79 ERA) for St. Paul.

In Game 1, Justin Bass doubled home Ridge Carpenter with the winning run in the top of the ninth inning of the scheduled seven-inning game and then closer Jamie Vermilyea got the job done in the bottom of the ninth as the Goldeyes beat the Saints 5-4.

The Goldeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Jon Weber hit a solo homer, his fourth of the year, and then, with St. Paul leading 2-1, Brian Myrow hit a solo homer in the fourth to tie the game at 2.

Then, in the fifth, Price Kendall hit his first home run of the year, a two-run bomb, and Winnipeg had a 4-2 lead. But St. Paul tied it again in the bottom of the fifth and not until Bass's game-winning double in the ninth did another run cross the plate.

Ian Thomas (6-2, 1.95 ERA), who pitched 3.2 solid innings of relief got the win while Vermilyea (3.00 ERA) picked up his eighth save of the year. It was a big bounce-back save for Vermilyea, the former member of the Toronto Blue Jays, who blew his fifth save opportunity of the year on Saturday night in Fargo. Kyle Foster (1-1, 2.23 ERA) suffered the loss for St. Paul

Game 3 of this four-game series goes Tuesday night at 7 p.m., live with Paul Edmonds, on Sports Radio 1290.
