American Association Game Recaps

Fargo-Moorhead 2, Sioux Falls 0

The fans in Sioux Falls on Monday night nearly saw history made, but not the kind of history they would want. Visiting starting pitcher Jake Laber struck out 10 batters and faced two more than the minimum, only a Reggie Abercrombie fifth-inning double away from a no-hitter in the RedHawks' 2-0 win. Laber retired the first 12 batters before Abercrombie's two-bagger to open the fifth dashed any hopes of a perfect game. But Laber didn't let that slow him down, as the 6-foot lefty mowed down 17 of the final 18 - with only an error interrupting his dominance - to take his seventh win of the season. The RedHawks backed Laber up with a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. Not much run support, but not much was needed on this night. Laber's ERA now sits at an impressive 2.19 for the season.

Winnipeg 5, St. Paul 4 (Game 1 - 9 innings)

With the score tied in the ninth at 4-4 in a game that was only scheduled to go seven, Winnipeg 2B Justin Bass doubled in CF Ridge Carpenter to break the dead heat that had been in place since the fifth. It was Bass' second hit of the night and his first RBI. The Goldeyes sent relief pitcher Jaime Vermilyea out for the bottom of the frame, and in turn the Tucson native retired three of four batters to give his club a one-run win. Leadoff batter Adam Frost paced the Saints, batting in two runs on a 2-for-4, lifting his season average to .286. But Frost's eight teammates that followed him in the lineup managed just six hits and two RBI, in the end falling one run shy of the Goldeyes.

St. Paul 2, Winnipeg 1 (Game 2 - In Progress - Bottom 4)

The Saint lead the Goldeyes 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning in Game 2. The game is scheduled for seven innings.

Amarillo 8, El Paso 2

Clutching to a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Sox scored five to take control of their game against El Paso, eventually winning, 8-2. Three of the seventh-frame scores came with two outs already on the board thanks to back-to-back singles from RF Tim Alberts and LF Josh Banda. Banda joined leadoff CF Fehlandt Lentini and DH Lee Cruz as the only Sox with more than one hit, each of them going 2-for-4. But no one picked up more base knocks than El Paso's Scott Hodsdon. The designated hitter went 3-for-4 with a run scored. His teammates put seven more hits on the board and earned three bases on balls, but starting Sox pitcher Matt Elliot worked around the base runners to allow only two runs in a complete-game effort. Elliot also struck out five.

Fort Worth 14, Grand Prairie 1

The Cats took a 14-1 win from Grand Prairie on Monday, with 12 of those runs being produced by the six-through-nine hitters. And no one out-performed six-hole hitting Marcos Rodriguez, who went an astounding 6-for-6 with two runs and four RBI. But only his six hits were a team best. 3B Butch Ballez had a game-high five RBI on a 3-for-5 night, and Trent Lockwood crossed home plate three times to lead all players. The game was close into the middle innings, but a four-run fourth followed by a four-run fifth gave Fort Worth a dominating lead. With the Cats piling on the runs, Fort Worth starting pitcher Dwayne Pollock was busy mowing down AirHogs batters, striking out twice as many players (six) as he allowed hits (3) in a nine-inning outing.

Shreveport-Bossier 11, Wichita 9

The Captains jumped out to an 11-0 lead after four innings. But a valiant effort form Wichita nearly saw that lead disintegrate. But after a three-run Brent Clevlen homer in the ninth drew Wichita to within two runs with no outs on the board, Captains reliever Lee Henry buckled down, retiring the next three batters to pick up his first save of the season. Shreveport-Bossier put nine runs on the board in the first two frames, a third of them coming on a second-inning Palmer Karr Jr. home run. Karr Jr. went 2-for-4 with game-bests three runs and four RBI. The Wingnuts began their near-comeback in the sixth, when LF Mike Conroy and 1B Jorge Delgado each registered two-run homers. Conroy and Delgado each went 2-for-5 with two runs, with Conroy driving in three and Delgado forcing two runs home. But Henry's late-inning turnaround after the Clevlen homer sealed Wichita's fate that seemed all but certain after the first two innings.

Gary SouthShore 12, Sioux City 11

Trailing 10-2 entering the seventh inning, Sioux City went on a nine-run tear to take its first lead of the game at 11-10. But despite momentum appearing to be in the Explorers' favor, Gary SoutShore wasn't about to let a nine-run lead turn into a loss. The RailCats got RBI singles from 1B Mike Rohde and RF Cristian Guerrero in the eighth and ninth, Guerrero's driving in PR Nolan Nicholson to win the game for Gary SouthShore, 12-11. The Explorers' nine-run seventh began with six consecutive hits, including back-to-back homers from CF Dustin Jones and 3B Wally Backman. But perhaps more impressive is the fact that four runs went on the board after the Explorers already had picked up two outs. But thanks to clutch hitting from Gary SouthShore, that seventh-inning rally was for naught, and the RailCats took their 32nd win of the season.

Lincoln 10, Kansas City 9

The tying T-Bones run stood just 90 feet from home plate in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday. That's when Lincoln reliever PJ Zocchi did what pitchers in his position are supposed to do. He struck out T-Bones DH Jim Fasano to earn the save and give his club a 10-9 victory. The SaltDogs trailed by three runs in the middle of the sixth. But solid outings in the next three frames saw them take that three-run deficit and turn it into a one-run lead, a lead that SaltDogs relievers Jordan Stern and Zocchi held onto to win the game.
