
Captains Hold on For 11-9 Win Over Wichita, DiPietro Earns Eighth Victory

WICHITA, Ks.---The Shreveport-Bossier Captains ended their four-game losing streak with an 11-9 win over the Wichita Wingnuts Monday night, holding on after jumping out to an 11-0 lead after three and a half innings. Captains starter Ryan DiPietro (8-2) threw seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and tying a season high with seven strikeouts. He became the third pitcher in the league to reach eight victories.
Palmer Karr Jr. and Uriak Marquez hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning and the Captains held off Wichita, who scored nine unanswered runs in the final four innings to make it close.
Shreveport-Bossier scored five runs on six hits off Wichita starter Jerod Bradford (0-2) in the first. Andres Rodriguez started off the scoring with an RBI double, plating Mike Provencher. With the score 3-0, Uriak Marquez hit an RBI triple, the first hit on a 3-for-4 night for the Captains second baseman. Alex Cowart's base hit would score Marquez with the inning's final run.
Karr Jr. provided the pop in the second inning, hitting a towering three-run homer over the left field scoreboard at Lawrence Dumont Stadium to give the Captains an 8-0 lead. Marquez would make it back-to-back long balls when he hit his team-leading eighth home run of the year.
In the fourth, both Karr Jr. and Marquez were hit by pitches. Bryan Fricther would knock them both in with a double to give the Captains an 11-0 lead.
DiPietro sailed threw his first five innings, allowing just four base runners and no runs. However, Wichita would begin to mount their comeback in the sixth. Jose Duran led off the inning with a single and Mike Conroy hit his first home run of the year to put the Wingnuts on the board. With one out, Juan Richardson doubled and Jorge Delgado hit his second home run of the series to make it 11-4. But DiPietro would retire the final two batters in the inning and then get out of a two-on, no-out jam in the seventh to preserve the seven-run lead.
Six Wichita relievers held the Captains to two runs over the final seven innings.
In the eighth, Edwin Bellorin's RBI ground ball scored Delgado to cut the lead to 11-5 off Captains reliever Mark Haynes.
Wichita would put the lead off men on off Shreveport-Bossier closer Dan Griffin in the ninth with back-to-back singles by Thomas Fitzgerald and Jose Duran. Conroy would score Fitzgerald on a double and Griffin would leave the game. Lee Henry (Sv, 1) allowed a three-run home run to Brent Clevlen, his first hit of the game, to make it 11-9 with no outs. Henry fell behind in the count 3-0 to Richardson but came back to strike him out looking. He then retired Delgado and Josh Workman on ground outs to give the Captains the victory.
Karr went 2-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs for the Captains. Marquez was 3-for-4 with three runs and two batted in. Perry was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Wichita's Conroy was 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs in the loss. With five home runs combined in the game there have now been eight long balls in the first two games of the series.
Shreveport-Bossier got back to .500 at 28-28 on the season and 2-7 on their 11-game road trip. The Captains improved to 9.5 games out of the American Association South Division and remain six games behind Winnipeg for the Wild Card at press time.
The Captains look to get back over .500 Tuesday, July 12 when they send Aaron Cunningham (2-6, 6.34) against newly-acquired Wichita hurler Derek Blacksher (3-6, 4.55), whom the Captains defeated last week at Ft. Worth. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
