Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 11-9 to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.

The Wingnuts rallied from an 11-run deficit to pull within two in the bottom of the ninth, but had their comeback ultimately fall short. The Captains' final nine runs all scored with two outs.

Shreveport-Bossier scored five runs in the top of the first against Wingnuts' starter Jared Bradford. Mike Provencher and Robert Perry opened the game with back-to-back singles. After Bradford struck out Bryan Sabatella, Andres Rodriguez doubled off the top of the left-center field fence to drive in Provencher with the first run if the night. Perry came home on Brian Peterson's RBI groundout to second.

Palmer Karr Jr. singled home Rodriguez with a groundball through the right side. Uriak Marquez made it 4-0 with a triple to right-center. Alex Cowart finished the rally with a line drive single to right that plated Marquez.

Shreveport added four more runs with two outs in the second. Karr hit a three-run home run over the scoreboard in left-center which was followed by a solo shot to right by Marquez.

Bradford took the loss, allowing nine earned runs on 11 hits in two innings. Bradford walked one and struck out two.

Bryan Frichter hit a two-out, two-run double down the right field line in the top of the fourth to increase the Captains' lead to 11-0.

Brandon Mathes led a string of six Wingnuts' relievers who held the Captains to just two earned runs on four hits over seven full innings. Kendy Batista, Eric Gilliland, Jared Simon, Matt Nevarez, and Marcos Tabata each worked a scoreless frame to keep the Captains at bay.

Wichita's comeback started in the sixth. Mike Conroy and Jorge Delgado each clubbed a two-run home run to cut the lead to 11-4. Edwin Bellorin hit an RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth that made it 11-5.

In the bottom of the ninth, Thomas Fitzgerald and Jose Duran hit consecutive singles against reliever Dan Griffin. Conroy then doubled off the fence in straightaway center field to cut the lead to five runs. Griffin was lifted from the game due to injury and replaced by Lee Henry, who promptly allowed a long, three-run home run to left-center to Brent Clevlen. Henry recovered, with the Captains now nursing a two-run lead, and retired the next three hitters in a row to end the game.

Ryan DiPietro started and earned the win for the Captains. DiPietro allowed four earned runs on seven hits in seven innings, walking three and striking out seven.

The Wingnuts and Captains continue their series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Derek Blacksher is scheduled to make his official return to the Wingnuts.
