Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - A week after outfielder Cristian Guerrero took home the first award for the Gary SouthShore RailCats as members of the American Association, second baseman Brad Boyer was named the American Association's Batter of the Week by Pointstreak.com for the week ending July 10, it was announced today.

Boyer, 27, currently leads the RailCats in hitting and his .379 batting average is good for sixth in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. In five games this week, Boyer batted .500 going 12 for 24 at the plate, and of his twelve hits, seven went for extra-bases including two doubles, two triples and three home runs. Boyer scored five times and drove in another 12 while also drawing a pair of intentional walks from the St. Paul Saints over the weekend. With an on-base percentage of .538 and a slugging percentage of 1.125, Boyer earned a truly-impressive 1.663 OPS for the week.

Boyer did much of his damage on consecutive nights, July 8 and 9, against the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium. In a 13-3 RailCats win Friday night, Boyer went 4-5 at the plate including a homer, five RBI and a pair of runs scored. A day later the University of Arizona alum smacked two homers and a triple in his first three at-bats with three RBI and another pair of runs scored in a 5-4 loss to the Saints.

The Santa Monica, Calif. native joined the RailCats after spending the last five seasons as a member of the San Francisco Giants organization where Boyer advanced as high as Triple-A Fresno in 2010. A career .273 hitter in 451 professional games prior to this season, Boyer's best season with the Giants came in 2008 where he batted .331 in 87 games with Single-A Advanced San Jose and Double-A Connecticut. The seven homers Boyer belted through 55 games in 2011 have already matched his previous career mark set in 2008.

Playing collegiately at the University of Arizona, Boyer set several freshman records including runs, hits, doubles, triples, and stolen bases, becoming the first ever Arizona freshman to earn First Team All-Pac 10 honors. Other freshman honors included a Freshman All-America choice by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. Boyer finished among the career leaders in games, at bats, runs, hits, triples, and stolen bases at Arizona. A four-year starter, Boyer played in the 2004 College World Series and became just the fourth player in school history to score 200 or more runs.
