ST. PAUL, MN (July 11, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints had their opportunities in extra innings to put the game away, but couldn't come up with the big hit and instead it was the Winnipeg Goldeyes who got the clutch hit as the Saints lost 5-4 in game one of a double header at Midway Stadium on Monday night.

With the scheduled seven inning game heading into the eighth the Saints had the best opportunity to win it in the bottom of the inning. Jason Cooper led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and Brandon Tripp was walked intentionally. Alex Garabedian then reached on a fielding error by third baseman Louis Ott to load the bases. Jonathan Van Every, however, struck out and Steve Mays grounded out to end the inning.

In the ninth the Goldeyes took advantage of their opportunity as Ridge Carpenter, who came into the game in the sixth as a defensive replacement, singled. With one out he stole second and then scored on a double from Justin Bass.

The Saints had a chance in the bottom of the ninth when Adam Frost led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a groundout, but Jason Cooper struck out to end the game.

The Goldeyes used the long ball early on as Jon Weber hit a solo shot, his fourth of the season, in the second for a 1-0 lead.

The Saints took a 2-1 lead in the third when Frost doubled home two.

The Goldeyes hit another homer in the fourth when Bryan Myrow tied it with a solo homer to right-center, his seventh of the season.

The Goldeyes got their third homer of the game, a two-run homer from Price Kendall, his first of the season, in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

The Saints answered in the bottom of the inning when Van Every and Mays hit back-to-back singles and then were sacrificed over. Ronnie Bourquin's RBI single made it 4-3 and Ole Sheldon's sacrifice fly tied the game.
