Gladiators Win Shootout over Stingrays, 6-5

Bruce Mulherin's fourth round shootout goal was the difference as Gwinnett defeated the South Carolina Stingrays 6-5 in a shootout on Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Gwinnett improves to 9-4-3 with the win.

South Carolina took a 1-0 lead on a goal Matt Stefanishion just 1:22 into the first period. Sliding behind the Gladiators defense, Stefanishion beat Gladiators netminder Dave Caruso on a breakaway for the goal. Calil MacLean sprung Stefanishion on the breakaway to pick up an assist on the goal.

Donny Grover's slapshot from the right wing face off circle gave the Stingrays a 2-0 lead just eight seconds into a power play. Peter Szabo and Jamie Fraser collected the assists on the goal just five minutes into the first period.

Gwinnett got on the board with a shorthanded goal at the 9:49 mark of the first period. Joel Stepp beat South Carolina netminder Davis Parley over the glove with a quick snapshot as he squirted through the South Carolina defense into the slot. For Stepp, it was his 3rd goal of the season. Scott Mifsud picked up an assist as he slid the puck up to Stepp to set up the marker.

South Carolina answered right as the power play that Gwinnett scored the shorthanded goal during expired as Kyle Wilson flipped the puck past an outstretched Caruso for the marker. Fraser added his second assist of the game on the goal while Grover also picked up a helper on the goal at 11:21 of the first period.

MacLean pushed the Stingrays lead to 4-1 at the 3:23 mark of the second period. Taking a rink wide pass from Stefanishion, MacLean beat Carsuo with a one-timer for the marker.

Gwinnett answered with the next four goals to take a 5-4 lead to the second intermission. Andy Contois was credited with the first of Gwinnett's four goals as he ripped a slap shot off the back dasher where the rebound caromed off a Stingray and into the South Carolina net for the goal. Brandon Kaleniecki and Bruce Mulherin had the assist on the goal at the 4:13 mark of the second period.

Gwinnett cut the lead to one goal on Mifsud's 4th goal of the season as he collected a rebound in the slot and rolled the puck past Parley for the marker. Mike Vigilante and Stepp had the assists on the goal as they worked the puck around deep in South Carolina zone.

Colton Fretter added his team leading 13th goal of the season as he ripped a slap shot past Parley from 25 feet out for the goal on the power play. Mifsud and Vigilante each collected their second assist of the game on the goal at 14:08 of the second period.

Gwinnett took the lead on Vigilante's 8th goal of the season as he flipped the puck over the shoulder of Parley along the goal line for the maker at the 16:07 mark of the second period. Jon Awe and Mifsud collected the assists on the power play goal for Gwinnett.

Fraser tied the game up at five as he slid into the slot and rolled the puck past Caruso for the marker at the 5:11 mark of the third period. Stefanishion and MacLean posted the assists on the goal for the South Carolina.

A tight overtime pushed the game to a shootout where Scott Mifsud and Jarrett Konkle exchanged second round shootout goals while Mulherin's tally proved to be the game winner. Dave Caruso turned aside four of South Carolina's shooters in the shootout to record the win.

Gwinnett finished with two power play goal on seven chances while South Carolina went 1-for-10 on the man advantage. Caruso finished with 47 saves as Gwinnett was out shot 52-27 in the shootout win.
