Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

West Valley City, UT - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, faced a frustrated Utah squad in game one of a two-game series. With the absence of captain Kiel McLeod, the Salmon Kings were attacked 7-3 by the Grizzlies.

It took the home team 46 seconds to score in the first period. Brendan Cook earned his first goal with the Grizzlies, beating Goaltender Bryan Bridges with a shot from the left circle. Utah held the 1-0 until with 4:18 left in the first, Darryl Lloyd grabbed a turnover in Grizzly territory and backhanded the puck past Netminder Rob McVicar to tie the game and earn his fifth goal of the season.

Victoria grabbed their first lead of the game before the first intermission. While on the powerplay, David Wrigley popped in one of many rebounds in a crowded crease for his tenth point of the season. Just 30 seconds later, the Grizzlies tied it up 2-2 as winger Ryan Kinasewich crossed from the left to right slot and snapped a shot top corner.

The Salmon Kings jumped ahead again in the second period as Wes Goldie tallied his third shorthanded goal of the season at 6:27 into the period. Goldie and Milan Gajic sped ahead for a 2-on-1 and Goldie tapped in his eighth goal of the season into an open cage.

The Grizzlies scored five unanswered goals between the second and third periods to claw away with the victory. Still in the second period, just after an expired Grizzly powerplay, Forward Matt Craig tied the game 3-3 and on the following Utah powerplay, Assistant Captain Brad Herauf scored shortside form the left circle for the 4-3 lead. Defenseman Tyler Liebel scored his third of the season and Kinasewich earned his second goal of the night in Utah's surge ahead for a 6-3 lead. And with 1:18 remaining in the game, Justin Cox tallied his third point of the night.

Final score: 7-3 Utah

McVicar earned his fourth win of the season, and Bridges suffered his third loss. Victoria was 1 for 9 with the man advantage and Utah was 1 for 8 on the powerplay. The Grizzlies and Salmon Kings were deadlocked at 35 shots apiece. Victoria (6-7-1) will try and settle the score tomorrow at West Valley City in game two of the series versus Utah (4-10-3) starting at 7:05 (MT) at the E-Center.
