Gladiators sign QB Shaun King
November 29, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Las Vegas Gladiators News Release
LAS VEGAS, NV, November 29, 2006 - The Las Vegas Gladiators came to terms today on a contract with former NFL quarterback Shaun King, it was announced by Gladiators' Head Coach Danton Barto. Per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
"We are very excited with the signing of Shaun King," said Gladiators' General Manager Sam Jankovich. "It is a great tribute to our coaching staff, organization and the Arena Football League. Shaun is without a doubt one of the real outstanding quarterbacks in the country and, as important as anything, an individual with great character and a commitment of making a difference in people's lives."
"Shaun King is a veteran quarterback who should adapt to the AFL game quickly and make us better immediately," said Barto. "He was one play away from starting in the Super Bowl in 2000, and he ran a lights out offense at Tulane University, where he led the NCAA in passing efficiency."
King (6-1, 228, Tulane) spent seven years in the NFL with the Bucs, the Cardinals and the Indianapolis Colts. He has a 14-8 record as an NFL starter and guided the Buccaneers to the NFC Championship Game following the 1999 season. He started all 16 games for Tampa Bay in 2000, leading them to a 10-6 record and a birth in the NFL Playoffs.
"Shaun King is a very fine person and a very fine quarterback," said Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian. "He will be both an asset to the Gladiators franchise and to the Las Vegas community."
On the strength of its Mission Statement and Fans' Bill of Rights, the Arena Football League - the second-longest running football league in U.S. history - begins its 21st season in 2007. Often recognized as one of the nation's most affordable and fan-friendly sports leagues, the Arena Football League is America's fastest-growing sport.
