Gladiators beat Stingrays, 6-4

For the second straight game, the Gladiators came from behind, this time to beat the South Carolina Stingrays 6-4, as Jeff Campbell recorded his first professional hat trick in the win for the Gladiators on Friday night. South Carolina took a 1-0 lead early in the second period on a goal by Robin Gomez. Rich Peverley threaded the puck through bodies in front of the Gladiators net to a waiting Gomez along the top of the slot for the tally. Marty Clapton also had an assist on the goal at 2:57 of the second period. Brad Parsons pushed the South Carolina lead to 2-0 ripping a slapshot past Gladiators netminder Sean Fields off a rebound 10:31 into the second period. Ed Courtney and Jeremy Stevenson picked up the assists on the goal. Mike Stathopoulos' 6th goal of the season on the power play pulled the Gladiators within a goal. Stathopoulos found the puck in the slot off a feed from Chris Durno and ripped a snapshot past South Carloina netminder Maxime Daigneault with 4:33 left in the middle period. Kris Goodjohn also picked up an assist on the power play goal. In the third period, the Gladiators tied the game at 2-2 on Jeff Campbell's quick wrist shot from the slot that beat Daigneault over the left pad. Rick Emmett and Kris Goodjohn added the assists on the goal just 2:46 into the third period. Gwinnett took its first lead of the game just 26 seconds later as Chris Durno caught Daigneault off guard and ripped a shot past the netminder from the top of the crease. Jeff Campbell added an assist on the goal at 3:12 of the third period. Emmett also had an assist on the goal. Trevor G. Johnson tied the game back up at 3-3 at 4:04 of the third period with a slap shot from the left wing point. Jeremy Stevenson and Courtenay picked up the helpers on the tally. Gwinnett took a 4-3 lead when Jim Jackson took a shot from the goal line and banked the puck off of the back of Daigneault at 13:31 of the third period. Goodjohn added an assist moving the puck into the corner to Jackson. Durno also picked up a helper on the goal. South Carolina stormed back with 1:29 left in the third period as Joe Tenute rolled the puck past Fields on a wrap-around. It was Courtenay and Stevenson again on the assists on the South Carolina goal. The Gladiators answered to regain the lead on Jeff Campbell's second goal of the game with 11 seconds left in the game. Campbell jammed the puck on the off wing past Daigneault with Durno and Goodjohn again picking up the helpers. Campbell picked up the hat-trick with an empty net goal at 19:59 of the third period firing the puck from the center red line into the open goal. Jim Jackson was credited with the assist on the empty net goal. With the win, the Gladiators improve to 22-13-5 on the season while Sean Fields picks up his 10th win of the season.
