Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Pee Dee Pride lost their sixth straight game Friday night, falling to the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 at Cricket Arena.
The Checkers netted the game's first goal just 1:39 into the opening period. Jason Dawe centered a pass in front for Mike Harder, who was left unguarded at the top of the crease. Sebastien Laplante was able to make the save on Dawe's initial shot, but the NHL veteran was able to slide the rebound past Laplante for his sixth goal of the season.
Pee Dee came right back to tie the game only 1:04 later. Brian Collins centered a pass in the high slot for Jake Wiegand, and the Pride defenseman was able to one-time a shot through goaltender Alex Westlund's five hole for his third tally of the season.
Charlotte scored at 14:10 of the opening period to take a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes. Eddie Pershin gathered in a loose puck in the neutral zone and fed Thomas Bellemare coming in behind the Pride defense. The rookie was able to wrist a shot over Laplante's blocker for his first professional goal.
The Checkers scored the only goal of the second period, at the 8:26 mark, taking a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes. Dan Preston's shot from the top of the right-wing circle eluded Laplante on the near post as the Pride goaltender was screened on the play by Thierry Douville.
Pee Dee pulled back within one with a power play goal at the 8:52 mark of the third period. Collins fed Darryl Green skating into the left wing circle and Green's quick shot eluded Westlund for his fourth goal of the season.
The Pride had several great chances to get the equalizer, outshooting the Checkers 13-7 in the final period, but Westlund shut the door to give the Checkers the win.
