Gulls announce three-team blockbuster deal

San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls announced Friday the acquisition of defenseman Grady Moore from the Dayton Bombers in a three-team deal that sent goaltender Trevor Koenig and forward Colin Shields to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies.

The other players involved in the deal were Atlantic City forwards Rob McFeeters and Brett Nowak, who both ended up with Dayton. McFeeters and Nowak were initially traded to the Gulls for Koenig and Shields, before being sent to Dayton by San Diego for Moore and future considerations.

Moore, 26, notched 14 points (2g, 12a) in 33 games for the Bombers this season. He also played one game for the American Hockey League's Milwaukee Admirals. Last season, the 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder from Castlegar, British Columbia recorded 24 points (5g, 19a), splitting time with Dayton and the Toledo Storm.

During his rookie season in 2002-03, Moore ranked ninth among all ECHL defenseman (second among rookie defenseman) with 47 points. He was also sixth among all ECHL rookies (first among rookie defensemen) with 40 assists and was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team.

"This obviously is a huge deal and arguably the biggest transaction in Gulls history," Gulls head coach Martin St. Amour said. "Trevor did so much for this club both on and off the ice and his records and accolades speak from themselves. But our affiliations with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Cincinnati Mighty Ducks really forced us to make this deal. We just couldn't juggle three goaltenders anymore.

"While we're also sad to see Colin go, the organization is very excited about obtaining Grady Moore. He is a proven defenseman in this league at both ends of the ice and he comes very-much recommended by other ECHL clubs. The entire Gulls organization wishes nothing but the best for Trevor and Colin, but we really feel like we're heading in the right direction toward our goal of winning another championship."

Before turning pro, Moore played four years at Bowling Green University. He was Dayton's team captain this season.

Koenig, 30, was 10-6-2 with a 2.79 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in 18 appearances for the Gulls this season. During his tenure with San Diego, which began during the 2000-01 season, Koenig had an overall record of 146-52-21 with a franchise best 2.38 GAA, .916 save percentage and 17 shutouts. Three of those seasons were played in the West Coast Hockey League (2000-01 through 2002-03).

The Gulls originally acquired the 5-foot-10-inch, 185-pound native of Edmonton in December 2000 from the Idaho Steelheads. He has won 20-or-more games in each of the last four seasons, including a career high 42 in 2001-02. Koenig has won 30-or-more games in three of those seasons and was a member of two San Diego Taylor Cup Championship teams (2001 and 2003).

Shields, 25, registered 14 points (3g, 11a) and 10 penalty minutes in 34 games this season – his rookie year. The 5-foot-11-inch, 176-pound native from Glasgow, Scotland played the previous three years at the University of Maine. Shields notched a team-leading 44 points (18g, 26a) and 40 penalty minutes for Maine last season. His best collegiate season came in 2001-02 when he recorded 46 points (29g, 17a) and 39 penalty minutes, on his way to being named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Shields was a sixth round selection of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

The Gulls also announced Friday that defenseman Nikita Korovkin as been loaned to the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch and forward Cory Pecker has been re-assigned to the AHL's Mighty Ducks.

The Gulls continue their road trip Friday against the Wheeling Nailers, with game-time scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (PST).* San Diego will play the Johnstown Chiefs Saturday at 4 p.m. (PST) before concluding the trek Sunday back in Wheeling, which will be a special 11 a.m. (PST) start-time.
