Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – Fighting to maintain their spot atop the East Division, the Charlotte Checkers faced off against the Pee Dee Pride tonight at Cricket Arena. Coming into tonight's match-up, Pee Dee had lost a team record five straight. The Checkers have not beaten the Pride in their two previous meetings this season, dropping both games 3-2. Tonight the Checkers turned the tables, thrashing the Pride in a 3-2 victory.

The Checkers came out swinging as Jason Dawe took an Eddie Pershin pass and put it between the Pee Dee pipes within the first two minutes of the first period. The Pride answered with a Jake Wiegand goal at 2:43 that eked past Checkers goalie, Alex Westlund. The Checkers regained the lead to close out the period as Thomas Bellemare took a pass from Pershin and lit the lamp.

Scoring slowed down in the second period with an onslaught of penalties and mild skirmishes. The Checkers tallied another goal, thanks to a Dan Preston shot from another Pershin pass at 8:26 to make it 3-1. Westlund had a perfect second period, stopping 10 shots.

In the third period, Pee Dee kicked it up a notch, bringing the game to a close 3-2 score. Darryl Green scored 8:52 of the period on a power play, taking a pass from Greg Johnson, his second assist of the night. A strong performance from Westlund in the final minutes of play secured the victory for the Checkers.

The Checkers are at home again tomorrow, February 5th, to take on former Checkers coach Don MacAdam and the Dayton Bombers at 7:00 PM. The first 2,000 fans will receive a free bobble head of current Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson. For more information, call 704-342-4ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
