Four Norfolk Tides Named to 2015 Triple-A All-Star Game

July 2, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

The International League today announced the rosters for the 2015 Triple-A All-Star Game, and four Norfolk players have been named to the team. Outfielder Dariel Alvarez was elected to start the contest, while catcher Steve Clevenger and pitchers Michael Bowden and Oliver Drake have been selected to the team.

Alvarez, 26, has hit .270 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI for the Tides. He's appeared in each of Norfolk's 78 games this season, and he ranks among International League leaders in at-bats (1st, 307), total bases (2nd, 135), games (T-2nd, 78), home runs (T-4th, 12) and hits (5th, 83). Originally signed by Baltimore as a free agent on July 24, 2013, Alvarez ranked third in the IL with a .340 average and six home runs in the month of June. He's currently rated as the #5 prospect in the Orioles organization by Baseball America.

Clevenger, 29, has hit .331 with two home runs and 21 RBI in 45 games for Norfolk this season. He's batted .455 (5-11) over two stints with Baltimore this year, and he's approximately 30 plate appearances shy of qualifying among the IL leaders, where his .331 average would rank second in the league. Acquired by Baltimore from the Chicago Cubs in a trade on July 2, 2013, Clevenger ranks fifth among IL catchers as he's thrown out 28.3 % of attempted base stealers.

Bowden, 28, has gone 6-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 22 games (eight starts) for the Tides this season. His 2.17 ERA leads the International League, and he ranks third in the league with a 1.13 WHIP. Acquired by Baltimore from Cincinnati on April 2, Bowden's six victories are tied for the team lead and are tied for the third-most among Orioles minor leaguers. He also established a Tides franchise record earlier this season by not allowing an earned run over a 28.0 inning stretch from May 12 - June 12.

Drake, 28, has gone 1-1 with 12 saves and a 0.67 ERA in 24 relief outings with Norfolk this year. Drafted by Baltimore in the 43rd round of the 2008 draft out of the United States Naval Academy, Drake ranks fourth in the IL with 12 saves and has held IL batters to a .132 average. He's registered 18 consecutive scoreless outings with the Tides, as the last run he surrendered in a Norfolk uniform came on April 26. Drake has also made five appearances with Baltimore this season, posting a 3.52 ERA in his first major league season.

Norfolk and Charlotte each led the International League with four All-Star representatives. It is the first time the Tides have had four Triple-A All-Star Game participants since 2000, when 1B/OF Ryan McGuire, OF Jason Tyner, C Vance Wilson and RHP Eric Cammack were all selected to the contest.

The International League All-Stars will take on the Pacific Coast League's All-Stars in the 28th annual First National Bank Triple-A All-Star Game, presented by Gildan, on Wednesday, July 15 in Omaha, Nebraska. The matchup will be broadcast live from Werner Park on MLB Network, American Forces Network, MiLB.TV, and the Triple-A All-Star Game Radio Network beginning at 7:00 pm CST.

Norfolk, which leads the International League South Division, hosts the Durham Bulls at Harbor Park on July 2 and July 3, with postgame fireworks following each game as part of Independence Day celebrations.
