IL1 Toledo Mud Hens

Five Run Second Carries Indians to Series Opener

July 2, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Toledo Mud Hens organization received great news prior to the first pitch Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. The announcement of the 2015 Triple-A All Star Game rosters were released and included three well deserving Mud Hens, right handed starter Buck Farmer, third basemen Jefry Marte, and shortstop Dixon Machado. The game will be played on July 15 at Werner Park in Omaha, NE.

On the field however, the results weren't so encouraging for the Hens. The first place Indianapolis Indians got their offense going from the very first inning as John Bowker sent a Tim Melville offering to the left field gap, to score two Indians and take the lead 2-0. In the second the explosive Indy lineup, hitting .258 on the season, sent five more across the plate thanks to a few Toledo miscues. Following a double play, Jose Tabata grounded a ball to Alexi Casilla at second and it looked like the inning was over until Casilla booted the ball, allowing two more runs to cross for the Indians. Proceeding the error Tim Melville looked to put a cap on the inning for the Hens, but Indy's Corey Hart had different plans as he sent a Melville fastball over the wall for a home run and pushed the lead to 7-1.

For Toledo, Alex Avila made his presence known in his fifth rehab appearance, as he lead off the home half of the first with a homer to right off of Indy starter Wilfredo Boscan. In the second, it was Jeff McVaney singling on a line drive to center, scoring Daniel Fields and putting the score at 7-2. McVaney made his first Toledo appearance since June 16th, after being recalled from Erie prior to Thursday's game. In the bottom of the sixth Manny Pina got in on the action with a knock to center field scoring Mike Hessman and decreasing the Indy lead to four. The RBI was Pina's 18th of the season. A.J. Morris and Brad Lincoln came on for the Indians to silence the Toledo offense for the remainder of the game, throwing a combined 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

After Melville's circus-like second, the big right hander settled down to silence Indy's bats in innings three through six, racking up five strikeouts. Melville exited with a line of 6.0 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. For Indianapolis starter Wilfredo Boscan picked up his sixth win of the season, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits.

In other news, Hens' outfielder Xavier Avery was released by the Detroit Tigers after Wednesday night's game due to an exercise of an opt-out clause in his contract. However, the organization quickly made a corresponding move, signing free agent outfielder Trayvon Robinson to a minor league deal to fill another corner spot. Robinson's last action came earlier this year with the Reno Aces (AAA) where he hit .276 in 37 games with the club.

Toledo and Indianapolis are back at it Friday night in the second game of the short two game set. First pitch is set for 7:00pm.
