Buchanan's Gem Helps Pigs Clip Wings, 7-1
July 2, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
In his return from a sprained ankle, RHP David Buchanan allowed one run in 6.1 IP as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (34-48) won their fifth straight by defeating the Rochester Red Wings (43-37) by a score of 7-1 on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Buchanan (2-0) gave up a run on seven hits to go along with three walks and four strikeouts in the 6.1 innings of work.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth as Buchanan and Wings starter Greg Peavey traded zeroes.
Lehigh Valley took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth as Jordan Danks delivered an RBI double to score a run and Brian Bogusevic (2-4, RBI, SB, R) knocked home another with an RBI single.
Both runs were charged to Peavey (0-2)-who was pitching on three days rest-as he allowed the two runs on five hits to go along with a pair of walks and five strikeouts in 5.0 IP.
A four-run sixth extended the Pigs lead to 6-0 as Chase d'Arnaud (2-5, 2B, 3 RBI, R) came through with a bases clearing, three-run bloop double that fell in between a trio of Red Wings in right centerfield and Tyler Henson plated the final run in the frame with an RBI single.
Aaron Hicks' RBI single in the top of the seventh put Rochester on the board and cut the lead to 6-1. RHP Nefi Ogando (2.2 IP, 2 H, BB, 2 K) came on in relief of Buchanan with the bases loaded and one out in the inning but got James Beresford to ground into a 4-6-3 double play and end the threat.
Ogando notched his first save of the season.
In the home half of the inning, Aaron Altherr was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to third on a single and scored on Gabriel Lino's sac fly to give Lehigh Valley a 7-1 advantage.
Cord Phelps extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the seventh inning.
The series wraps up on Friday at 7:05 p.m. from Coca-Cola Park as RHP Severino Gonzalez (1-4, 4.06) gets the start for the Pigs against Rochester RHP Jose Berrios (8-3, 3.08 in AA).
