Iowa Chops News Release

Thanks to four, 3rd period goals the Toronto Marlies defeated the Iowa Chops 6-1 on Friday night at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, moving the Iowa Chops winless streak to three games. The Marlies got it going early and often in the 1st period, with Chops goaltender David LeNeveu under constant pressure from the opening face-off. The Marlies would answer first on a 3 on 2 as former NHL'er Bates Battaglia beat his man to the back post to tip-in a pass from Tim Stapleton. The Chops had a couple of good chances thanks to some nice play in the offensive zone by Charlie Kronschnabel, but Marlies goaltender Justin Pogge, who was with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL a week ago, slammed the door to keep the Chops scoreless in the 1st period as the Marlies took a 1-0 lead to the lockerroom, as well as a 11-8 shots advantage. The 2nd period was more pressure from the Marlies, who took advantage of a Chops turnover at the Marlies blueline, which led to a 2 on 1 for Toronto and Alex Foster found Mark Bell on the backdoor as Bell lifted a shot underneath the crossbar over David LeNeveu for a 2-0 lead. The Chops ended their 6+ period scoreless streak while killing a penalty as Drew Miller took advantage of a bouncing puck at his own blueline, beat defenseman Staffan Kronwall to the loose puck, and slid one between the legs of Pogge for his 16th goal of the season. The 2nd period would end with the Chops trailing 2-1 and the Marlies outshooting the Chops 24-20 through two periods. The 3rd period was all Marlies as they scored two goals in the first couple of minutes to put the game out of reach and added two more late in the period for a total of four goals in the period and a 6-1 win. For the game, the Chops went 0 for 6 on the power play and are now 0 for their last 18 on power play chances. The Marlies would end up outshooting the Chops 34-29 and the Iowa Chops winless streak now is at three games. The Chops look to right the ship on Saturday with their 5th road game in six nights at the Hamilton Bulldogs. Face-off time is 6:00pm central.
