Springfield Falcons News Release

January 2, 2009 - The Springfield Falcons snapped a seven-game winless streak on Friday night at the MassMutual Center beating the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 in probably the most exciting shootout in Falcons team history. Bryan Lerg finally ended the marathon shootout with a goal in the ninth round capping off five straight goals in the extra session for the Falcons.

Trailing 3-2 in the shootout heading into their final shooter, Springfield's Derek Bekar converted in the fifth round sending the shootout to extra frames. The two teams swapped goals for three rounds before Manchester's David Meckler was stopped by Jeff Deslauriers, and Lerg slid one past Jonathan Bernier.

Tied 1-1 late in the third period, Ryan Potulny gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead at 18:59 of the final frame, but Manchester evened the score just 19-seconds later when Alec Martinez's shot found the back of the net with 42-seconds remaining in regulation.

After a scoreless first period, Guillaume Lefebvre opened the scoring with an even strength goal at 3:58 of the second period giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

In the third period, Manchester's Scott Parse tied the score at 1-1 with his eighth goal of the year at 7:49.
