Aeros Shutout by Binghamton 4-0, Trip Continues Tomorrow Night

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.- In their first ever matchup, the Binghamton Senators defeated the Houston Aeros 4-0 Friday night at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Reigning goaltender of the month Brian Elliott stopped all 21 shots for his league-leading 18th win of the season and second shutout. Houston was shutout for just the third time this season and first since November 23, 2008. Marc Cavosie, Josh Hennessy and Peter Regin scored for the B-Sens who improved their record to 19-11-3-3 while the Aeros fell to 17-14-1-5. The Aeros continue their road trip Saturday night when they travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take on the Penguins at 6:05 p.m. CST. The Aeros and Senators battled up and down the ice for much of the first period. Houston earned a power play when Neil Petruic went to the box for holding at the 11:19 mark, but they were unable to convert on their only power play of the period. At the 18:15 mark of the period, Aeros' defenseman Tomas Mojzis went to the box for tripping and the American Hockey League's top-ranked power play unit scored with 51 seconds remaining in the period. Josh Hennessy skated in on the left wing around a defenseman, faked a shot and went behind the goal line only to bank the puck off the back of Nolan Schaefer's leg to give the home team a 1-0 lead. After one period, Houston held a slight edge in shots at 8-7, but found themselves down by a goal going into the first intermission.
Binghamton added to their lead in the second period when former Aero Marc Cavosie buried his second goal of the season at the 6:43 mark. Cavosie found room moving in from the right circle, went to his backhand and found the back of the net. He was assisted by Ryan Shannon on the even-strength goal. Shots were tied in the second period at seven shots apiece, and the Aeros were unable to score on two power play chances in the period.
At the 14:26 mark of the third period, the Senators continued to add to their lead when Denis Hamel blasted a shot from the top of the left circle that rang off Schaefer's helmet and bounced over the goaltender. Peter Regin was behind Schaefer to push the puck into the open net for his sixth goal of the season. Houston pulled their goaltender with over five minutes to play in the game when Aaron Clarke received a minor at the 14:49 mark. The Aeros again were unable to score on their fourth power play of the game, and Schaefer stayed on the bench because just as Clark came out of the box Matt Carkner went to the box at the 17:17 mark. Shannon capped the scoring when he scored from his own blue line, a shorthanded empty-net goal at the 18:06 mark.
