Manitoba Moose News Release

In their first game of 2009, Manitoba was defeated by the Rochester Americans 2-1 for the first time this season at the MTS Centre. Michel Ouellet collected the only Moose goal, while Winnipegger Jacob Micflickier netted the game winner for the Amerks.

Manitoba started Friday night's divisional battle with Karl Goehring in net, opposite Americans netminder Mike Brodeur. The Moose ensured Brodeur wouldn't have an easy start, as Michel Ouellet slapped the puck into the net on the fourth shot of the night at 10:04.

At 14:54 Manitoba's powerplay unit made their first appearance when Dan Collins was sent away for hooking. Sixty seconds later, David Caruso went to keep Collins company in the box when he was dealt a tripping penalty, putting the Moose on a two-man advantage. Rochester's penalty killers looked sharp and repelled all four of Manitoba's chances, putting the club's back at even-strength.

The Americans tied the game up before the first period expired when Stefan Meyer tipped in a backhander on Goehring's doorstep. The Moose were leading in the shot department 9-7 and the club's were tied at one heading into the second stanza.

The Moose benefited from their third powerplay when Cory Murphy was reprimanded for hooking, but like the other two they couldn't beat Brodeur and went zero-for-three on the man-advantage.

The powerplay tables turned in favor of the Americans at 11:18, when Michel Ouellet was forced to sit out for interference. The visitors capitalized with an extra attacker as Winnipegger Jacob Micflikier's wrist shot hit the back of the net to put the Amercians up, 2-1.

Both clubs' exchanged powerplays in the third period but neither squad could net a goal on their respective advantages.

The Moose opted for an extra attacker with a minute left in the game, but six skaters couldn't tie the game and the Moose dropped their first match-up to the Americans 2-1.
