Foster's Late Goal Gives Beast Big Win over Walleye
March 24, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release
TOLEDO, OHIO - Brampton Beast forward Alex Foster scored the go-ahead goal with less than five minutes remaining in the third period and netminder Chris Dreidger turned in another rock-solid performance to lead the Beast to a wild 3-2 victory over the Toledo Walleye at the Huntington Centre in Toledo on Saturday night.
Foster earned first star honours with a goal and an assist while Jordan Henry and Jackson Leef provided single tallies for the Beast, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Dreidger earned the win between the pipes with a superb 37-save night.
The first period of play was largely dominated by the Walleye as they were able to put 20 pucks on goal in the opening frame alone, but Beast starting goaltender Dreidger was able to stop them all.
Despite being outshot early, the Beast held their ground and were able to strike first with just over four minutes remaining in the opening frame. Jordan Henry accepted a great pass from Luc Olivier Blain just inside the right wing blue line and sent a shot on goal that got by everybody, including Walleye netminder Pat Nagle, giving the Beast a 1-0 lead at 15:19.
The Beast pitched another defensive gem in the second period as they once again held the Walleye off the scoreboard. In the offensive end, the Beast did a better job maintaining the puck in the offensive zone and outshot the Walleye 11-9 but couldn't add to their lead, as the score remained 1-0 heading into the final period of play.
The intensity was taken up a notch in the third period. Toledo Head Coach Dan Watson was ejected early in the period to kick off a penalty-filled final frame as seven infractions were called between the two teams in the third period alone.
Momentum seemed to swing to the Walleye and they were finally able to beat a busy Dreidger as Colin Jacobs broke the shutout on a quick shot in front of the goal at 12:01.
Less than three minutes later, the Walleye, buoyed by a sell-out crowd of 8,000 fans, struck again to tie the game. Just two seconds after killing off the first penalty of a 5-on-3 situation, Mike Borkowski picked the top corner for a power play goal, erasing the Beast lead at 14:42.
With the crowd still buzzing from the hometown squad's late-game push, the Beast found a way to silence them for good.
Jackson Leef dove after a loose puck high in the offensive zone slot and pushed it onto the stick of Alex Foster. The veteran wasted no time snapping a quick shot on goal that tumbled over the pad of Nagle and trickled into the net for Foster's 13th of the season with only 4:16 remaining in the third.
Toledo pulled their goaltender in the final minutes of play and again turned up the pressure but Dreidger made several key saves down the stretch and held on to give the Beast the victory.
NOTES: The Beast finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill. Molson Three Stars: 3) Henry (BRM) 2) Borkowski (TOL) 1) Foster (BRM). The Beast will complete their busy three-in-three weekend tomorrow afternoon as they return home to the Powerade Centre to host the Indy Fuel on 'Hockey Fights Cancer' Day at 2:00PM.
